How I Fell in Love With Country Music
Guardian ^ | W

My life didn’t change when I saw the duelling banjos scene in Deliverance, but it was the first time I realised there was more to country music than the Benny Hill theme tune

y name is Martin and I love country music. There you go, I’ve said it. It’s not always an easy thing to do. When the subject comes up, I get a funny sort of look. Once you spring the c-word on people, you can see they’re thinking: “[darn], this bloke’s weird. Does he dress up like a cowboy at home and do those funny dances?”

Sometimes people like to crack a joke about country and I’ve heard most of them. There’s the one that goes: “Do you like country? Or just western?” And then there’s: “Yeeeeehaaaaa!” People think that one’s pretty hilarious. But there is one joke which is quite funny and also very telling. It goes like this. Two blokes go into a pub, somewhere in northern England. One of them, who is hard of hearing, goes to the bar to get some drinks. The barmaid says there’s a band on, a country and western band. The bloke goes back to his mate and sits down with the drinks. “There’s a band on tonight,” he says. The other bloke says “What type of band?” The other one replies: “I don’t know. Some [expletive] from Preston.”

Sorry to hit you with another c-word but the punchline neatly reflects popular contempt for country music. The gag is perceptive in that a lot of what we call country music is irredeemably naff – chugging pop-rock with lyrics about beer and trucks sung by blokes with hats like Garth Brooks and Jason Aldean. But I also hate the joke because it obscures everything that I love about country. There’s no rollicking

Hoo boy!

the lead instrument in the Benny Hill theme is an alto saxophone. There ain't no saxophones in country music!

These days modern country music is mostly recycled Bob Seger & the Eagles with a twang. Some of the acoustic stuff is good.

Hank plays it right.

You are in your truck and have an AM 1200 on the radio.

Maybe be fishing.

Maybe hitting the bar.

When I was stationed in the UK in the early 70’s there was a elder Brit civilian working on base that loved CW
Ivan was the type that always was doing something for someone, great sense of humor, and well liked.
When I got discharged in 73 I contacted my brother who was always going to record sales, garage sales etc.
and asked if he would find me some of the “greats”. He thought for me ...23 albums later, I had them * smiles* A month later I shipped them off to the
UK through the APO to a buddy to give to Ivan because they were so hard to find there...
I still smile when I think of his reaction when he got them....yeah, priceless

Odd you should say that, because the Eagles roots come out of bands like The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers very country oriented.

I was a big country fan in the late 1980s, early 90s period when my peers were spaced out on Zeppelin, grunge, alternative, Beastie Boys, and other related stuff. Could not stand Billy Ray and his “Achy Breaky” tripe though.

Mom calls Contempory Christian music “sick calf dying in a thunderstorm” music. (When she isn’t calling it 7-11 music.)

I used to hate country. I just got sick of all the country my mother listened to in the late 60’s.

Then I met my wife, who loves country music, in 1997. It forced me to listen and, guess what? I really like a lot of it now. The thing that really sets it apart is the lyrics.

Some of my favorite lines: “I’m waitin’ on the sunset ‘cause yesterday ain’t over yet”, and “Some girls don’t like boys like me. Aw, but some girls do.

And Take a listen to “What was I thinkin’”. I practically lived that song.

But I’m not really a fan of “bro’ country”.

I recently “discovered” the Eagles and realized I used to hate them because they are not rock. They are really more country.

Glenn Frey really got in to the country style and did some great things. I think J.D. Souther “turned him on” to country. Eagles have been my favorite group forever. Hate the politics of Don Henley and Frey, though. Not sure about the others.
