Toto’s ‘Africa’ Is Somehow a Millennial Frat Anthem — and the Band Is ‘Boggled’
New York Post ^ | February 1, 2018 | Hardeep Phull

You can still hear it blasting out of classic rock and golden oldies stations all over the world, and against all odds, Toto’s “Africa” has become a millennial anthem 35 years later.

The rousing rocker is enjoying a second life thanks in part to the internet, and web users have embraced the song as a guilty pleasure. One Twitter account called “Africa by Toto Bot” tweets lyrics from the song every three hours. There is a website devoted to playing the song on a continual loop, and there are countless covers and affectionate reinterpretations on YouTube, including an 8-bit version that makes it sound like a classic Nintendo game.

The tune even got some love during Grammy Week in New York. DJ Z-Trip mixed a portion of “Africa” with tracks from Drake and Rihanna into his DJ set at a Spotify party honoring the Best New Artist nominees.

Metallica - “Of Wolf And Man”

https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=metallica+of+wolf+and+man+video&qpvt=metallica+of+wolf+and+man+video&view=detail&mid=5BE8BCC55985928C50805BE8BCC55985928C5080&&FORM=VDRVRV

“Of Wolf And Man”

Off through the new day’s mist I run
Out from the new day’s mist I have come
I hunt
Therefore I am
Harvest the land
Taking of the fallen lamb

Off through the new day’s mist I run
Out from the new day’s mist I have come
We shift
Pulsing with the earth
Company we keep
Roaming the land while you sleep

Shape shift, nose to the wind
Shape shift, feeling I’ve been
Move swift, all senses clean
Earth’s gift, back to the meaning
Back to the meaning of life

Bright is the moon, high in starlight
Chill in the air cold as steel tonight
We shift
Call of the wild
Fear in your eyes
It’s later than you realized

Shape shift, nose to the wind
Shape shift, feeling I’ve been
Move swift, all senses clean
Earth’s gift, back to the meaning
Back to the meaning of life

I feel a change
Back to a better day
Shape shift, hair stands on the back of my neck
Shape shift, in wildness is the preservation of the world
So seek the wolf in thyself

Shape shift, nose to the wind
Shape shift, feeling I have been
Move swift, all senses clean
Earth’s gift, back to the meaning
Back to the meaning of wolf and man

My uncle had a hunting ranch in north Transvaal. About 2000 hectares. He had a hell of a hunting lodge. It was the only song he played, over and over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over over and over

To this day I will punch anyone even humming the tune in their mouth.

LMAO. It’s a pretty tune, but not “rousing” or a “rocker”.

How about this version? https://youtu.be/MH9FyLsfDzw

I love that dang song. The video is cheesy but has a great patina thanks to being shot on celluloid.

I was just listening to “Tom Sawyer” by Rush, cranked up to 11, so I must have a different definition for “rousing rocker”

That's a big crowd dancing in the barn. I doubt if very many are "new Swedes."

More in the the way of “sleepy easy-listening” than rousing rocker. Not a bad tune, but not quite a heavy metal headbanger.

Toto did an album called "Hydra" that was pretty heavy, Lukather can shred with the best of him. His best solo IMHO is the one on The Tubes' "Talk To Ya Later".

I was in one of these new Taco Bells the other day where they’ve styled it to be sort of hipster trendy. Lots of college kids sitting around and what struck me was the music was all old stuff. No doubt Taco Bell focused grouped the music selection to appeal to a younger crowd, and apparently that’s what they found was acceptable to them.

It seems to be about a guy in Africa going to the airport to meet a girl from elsewhere (America?). He hears drums, meanwhile she only hears the conversations on the plane. He’s torn between leaving to start a new life with her or staying in the place he loves. He wants her to see why he loves it so much.

My favorite Lukather moment is his solo in the outro section of Roseanna. He just kills it.

The lead singer for Toto is Joseph Williams, the son of composer John Williams.

But he joined the band after "Africa" was a hit.
