I disagree with this premise. The war was not fought to free the slaves.
It was fought to preserve slavery, so the statement is correct.

I’m just old enough to remember having an American History teacher in middle school teach the same thing.
Although now that I think about it, he wasn’t the “really cool” History teacher all the “smart” kids raved about, because they took Latin with their advanced classes and my parents insisted I take Spanish with mine, and the History class schedules would have otherwise conflicted.
Correct, but slavery was a central cause. The South wanted to expand it to the new territories AND the south felt it was being treated unfairly because the could not compete with northern industries. They also feared that a Republican president could eventually seek the emancipation of the slaves - not trusting assurances to the contrary.
There are a lot of folks right here on FR that think the civil war was about slavery. I’m about ready to give up trying to explain things to them.
