Where is the outrage?

President Donald Trump reportedly endorsed a .25 cent gas tax hike to pay for his $200 billion infrastructure plan.

We pay enough gas taxes in California, thanks to Jerry Brown. WE WANT NO MORE GAS TAXES!

How do you want to pay for infrastructure repair? Or do you not want to do any?

Increasing fuel tax is a bad idea.
It punishes those that work.

I wish more people would do as you suggest. The constant spread of FUD is tiresome.

Three or four years ago I read the average price at the pump in Saudi Arabia was 0.25 a gallon.

I agree that it is a regressive tax.

It is a targeted tax however, paid by those driving on the roads that need repair, etc. Is there some better way to pay for infrastructure repair?

I would rather pay more in GAS tax than income tax or property tax any day of the week to fix roads. Gas taxes are a Use tax, which I have some control over. I know in my areas, when Gas prices were close to $4 Gallon back around 2008 or so, I did not see any noticeable difference in the traffic on the roads, which tells me the basic law of elasticity of demand had not kicked in at that price for most people (it did for me, I changed driving habits).

everybody uses roads, some more than others, raising income taxes at federal level for infrastructure (state level as well) and property taxes at local level for the fixing roads, not No but Hades NO!.

Trouble is government never spends the new taxes the way they say they will. Then they come back for more.

For those who never understood decimals, .25 cents is 1/4 of one cent. Not a big deal.

When almost half of the price of gasoline goes to the government, that is a big deal.

And, it will be a big deal for the working class and the poor if that 25 cents is added to higher gas prices when a Democrat gets back in charge.

At the very least, any increase should be temporary and the FBI can do without its new $2 billion complex.

We're collecting a record amount of revenue.

Let Congressmen and women sacrifice by giving up their pork pet projects and make other spending cuts the average American won't feel for a couple of years at least.

The budget is set, so that can’t be done for some time, unless you want to go to some kind of emergency powers. And, congress does not have a history of cutting much of anything. Congress just cut income taxes, they aren’t to go right back and raise them now.

It seems like a dedicated tax is the best solution. I wouldn’t mind it, but I can afford it. If I couldn’t afford it I’d drive less, which I did when young and poor during periods of high prices.

The Feds send $50 billion annually on surface transportation projects according to the CBO. Fuel taxes raise $35 billion. Assuming that the report is correct on adding 25 cents per gallon and not raising it TO 25 cents per gallon, that’s a jump of almost 240 percent. Why should taxes be raised like pharaoh doubling the quota of bricks while taking away the straw, when a more modest increase of say nine cents would be plenty?

“When almost half of the price of gasoline goes to the government, that is a big deal.”

The federal gas tax is 18.4 cents per gallon. In my state, Colorado, the state tax is 22 cents per gallon.

Total 40.4 cents.

Gas around $2.40 in Denver, $2.65 in the mountains.

I can’t speak to the supposed amount and whether it’s too much or too little.

I’m just waiting to hear a better realistic solution and I haven’t heard one.

It’s going to hurt no matter how we pay for it. Maybe we shouldn’t do it at all, just put up with current conditions other than emergency repairs.
