YouTube, that visual repository of everything forgotten, contains a 1993 interview from 1960s counterculture hero Bob Dylan airing heretical views on gun control that deserves a second look given the current debate.
The man behind the microphone appears guilty of the same sin committed by so many of Dylans admirers: projection. They imagine their heros words as ones they would say, albeit in a less oracular, lyrical way. So, when he embraces Christianity or watches boxing or goes positively-fourth-street on members of the press, they provide explanations for why Bob Dylan was not himself that day, which is their way of saying Bob Dylan was not themselves that day.
The MTV interviewer, annoying Dylana notoriously difficult man to interviewasks about the sources of teen violence.
Television causes all that violence, the songwriter tells the television interviewer. Thats my opinion. People see that on TV and want to do it. Thats just my opinion. TV, in my mind, forms peoples opinions.

Bob Dylan has never been able to measure up to what the left thinks he is.
Videodrome. (One of my favorite James Woods roles)
He’s a smart@$$ and I don’t think he wants to be taken too seriously. He seems to like to aggravate people, especially those on the left. The hippy dippy shallow simple minded types.
It’s been years since I’ve watched that movie. A strange flick if I remember correctly. Debra Harry was in it. I’ll have to watch it again. Thanks.
Dylan is enormously hard to pin down on any subject. One of the reasons for his decades long career and fascination.
It’s quite sick, in many respects, so don’t hold it against me.
But the idea of the TV taking over, S&M images stimulating the nervous system, and well, Debby Harry... I thought it was a very unusual and disturbing Cronenberg flick.
I remember that one. It’s like watching a slow train wreck. I don’t want to see it but I can’t turn away. It was quite imaginative.
Yeah, there’s a certain liquid-wet brick-orange color that was very vivid. “Max... I’m so glad you came to me.”
You gotta hand it to James Woods for taking a very risky part.
Dylan has been residing in Pete seegar’s head for decades
Ya hijacked the thread but that’s ok. I used to think I was the only one who watched that flick.
IMHO, one reason Dylan is so secretive? Protective? Reclusive? Is that the left would turn away from him if they really knew him.
Well, I’ve listened to a lot of Bob Dylan, too. A generational musical talent.
But his quote about the influence of TV on the weak-minded got me going.
Dylan learned his lesson in Newport in 1965, about how ‘tolerant’ the Left is.

Who knows what Dylan really thinks?
He can be a tad contrarian at times just to mess with people.
Yup. The “progressive” left showed how regressive they were.
Hillary is actually the embodiment of the oppressive establishment that folk singers of the 1960s were so contemptuous of.
Dylan’s always been an independent spirit; why I like him so much.
Love the author’s phrasing and descriptions:
> “So, when he embraces Christianity or watches boxing or goes positively-fourth-street on members of the press, they provide explanations for why Bob Dylan was not himself that day, which is their way of saying Bob Dylan was not themselves that day.”
The bottom line: No liberal hero is above the agenda!
Stay in lockstep or be shredded by the wolf pack.
I am gross and perverted
I’m obsessed ‘n deranged
I have existed for years
But very little has changed
I’m the tool of the Government
And industry too
For I am destined to rule
And regulate you
I may be vile and pernicious
But you can’t look away
I make you think I’m delicious
With the stuff that I say
I’m the best you can get
Have you guessed me yet?
I’m the slime oozin’ out
From your TV set
