David Odgen Stiers -- best known for playing Major Charles Winchester on "M*A*S*H" -- has died after a battle with bladder cancer ... according to his agent.

The actor joined the cast of "M*A*S*H" in 1977, playing an arrogant aristocrat and talented surgeon who filled the void left by the departure of the show's Frank Burns character. Stiers did it splendidly too ... earning himself 2 Emmy nominations.

He was great as Winchester. Raging liberal like most of the cast of M*A*S*H.

And he was Cogsworth in the original Beauty and the Beast of 1991.

RIP. Hope he made peace with God before he passed. Good actor.

He did a good job playing the bad guy on M*A*S*H; I remember I hated him.

Jamie Farr is conservative.

In one of the parodies that MAD Magazine did of the show, Winchester is demanding to know why Hawkeye and BJ treat him with such condescension. Hawkeye tells him “because we can’t take seriously anyone who talks like William F. Buckley but looks like Ed Asner!”

Is it my imagination or is the homosexuality rate higher than average among guys who use full middle names? David Hyde Pierce, Neil Patrick Harris et al.

Was old enough to start watching MASH regularly as Frank Burns was in charge. When Burns needed to be replaced I remember watching that first run episode. Enjoyed David Ogden Stiers performance as Charles
And as Timicin on ST:NG

The Christmas show when Winchester secretly shared his stash of goodies. I was glad the character got to show his human side, I don’t think Burns ever did.

Oh, that’s too bad. Major Winchester eventually grew likable.

McLean Stevenson, Harry Morgan, Larry Linville, and Wayne Rogers are all long gone. Now, David Ogden Stiers checks out, but that smug jackass Alan Alda is still with us. Is there no justice?

Don’t ever use your middle name. It either turns you gay or into a serial killer.
