To those who heard it, the sound was described variously as being a shrill squeal, a flute-like blare, the screeching of car brakes, a steam whistle, a mechanical scream, metal scraping against metal, an off-kilter siren, or a banshee like moan, but it was agreed by all that no matter what exactly it sounded like it was a truly intense and nerve-wracking racket which purportedly kept people awake and was said to drive pets nuts. The weird noise was also described as coming from the trees, from backyards, and even from the middle of the street, and no one could quite figure out where or what it was emanating from.
...
Forest Grove Police Capt. Mike Herbs said of the noise:
There would be a city ordinance violation if somebody was creating a noise like this, that late at night, on purpose to annoy people. At this point, we dont have information that would lead us to believe thats the case.
...
The wilder theories included that the sound was made by UFOs or that it was the wailing of some strange creature or entity like a ghost or Sasquatch, or even the portentous trumpeting of angels from Heaven. Indeed, whole forums were dedicated to the unexplained noise, where there were theories ranging that it was produced from vast underground bases and government mind control experiments, to the inscrutable activities of government installations or more paranormal explanations like ghosts and UFOs.

[A]physics professor at Forest Groves Pacific University, an Andy Dawes, has thrown in his two cents by saying:
An audio analyst from Florida emailed me a fairly detailed report that certainly agreed well with the hypothesis that it came from a faulty valve within an HVAC (or heat pump) unit....

Foxes make an awful noise at night.
the wailing of some strange creature or entity like a ghost or Sasquatch
That, and his South American cousin the Yeti, is a myth, much like shiks-appeal.
I’ve seen a Fisher didn’t know they make that sound
...a faulty valve within an HVAC (or heat pump) unit.

We have a guest bathroom that is used fewer than 40 times a year. A few years ago, after I had finished cleaning the tub, I heard a dog howling. Sounded like a Basset hound. I looked outside fully expecting to see a dog in the back yard and very close to the house, but there was none.
The husband was out working in the yard. I went out and asked him if he had heard the dog. He had not.
After I went back upstairs, I realized, upon hearing the “dog” again, that the sound was actually emanating from a pipe in the shower. So strange. I suppose some air had gotten caught in the line. Have never heard it again.
Good one!
HAARP
Obviously
I think its the continental plates pushing against each other.
Then a screech owl decided it might be fun to let us know that he was around. It was the first time that either of us ever heard one.
The words "frozen in terror" come to mind. We hugged each other like Shaggy and Scooby.
Damn, it sure is funny forty or so years later. But I about sperlt mah britches back then.
Maybe someone eating to much fiber more water required.
Mt Moodus mystery booms.
That story/TV short terrified me when I was young. I had nightmares for days after seeing it on TV.
Leftards screeching into space reflecting back at them. Leftards are bad for the environment.
Leftards cause hearing loss.
Women and children hardest hit.
