Lucasfilm announced this morning that Emmy-nominated producer and actor Jon Favreau has signed on to executive produce and write a live-action Star Wars series for Disney’s new direct-to-consumer platform. Favreau is a big Star Wars fan having played roles in both the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series and in the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story.
“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform,” says Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. “Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”
“If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t have believed you. I can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure,” added the filmmaker who has delivered such hit to Disney as Marvel’s Iron Man 1& 2 and Jungle Book. He’s in the midst of production on a live action version of The Lion King set for release in 2019. Jungle Book won an Oscar for VFX.
Disney CEO Bob Iger teased the news during the recent earnings call, but did not name the project. He said the studio output of four to five original series and another four to five original movies would head to the Disney entertainment OTT service for its planned launch in late 2019. Lucasfilm’s Carrie Beck had been overseeing the programming efforts for the OTT service.
The untitled Star Wars live-action series does not yet have a release date.
Since he wrote for the Obama administration, Favreau has plenty of experience with fiction and fantasy.
It’s hard to imagine how I could possibly care less.
I look forward to not seeing this.
So I guess Favreau and his partner “the little dude” flopped at their image consulting business.
The dude got the Hillary gig-——couldnt sell her book, couldnt get people to attend her campaign outings....failed to get her elected.
I have already not bought tickets.
Star Wars is getting milked more than Paramount ever did to Trek twenty years ago.
I can see it now.
The new series will follow Ja’quishia Ja’quishia Binks, an “other-colored” transsexual Gungan who wants to be a Jedi but has no midichlorines.
It finds and steals the silver SR-71 that used to belong to Quai-Gon and goes from system to system one step ahead of the Troopers and somehow always causes a massive political and physical battle.
Hilarity ensues.

Ugh. Brace for more of the same. Eventually, they will find a way to actually transmit HIV through the screen. Favreau is going to bring the same world-view to this as did J.J. Abrams.
You just knew when Disney bought the Star War franchise that they would overexpose, water down and milk it so hard that it would lose interest and nobody would care about it anymore. And that’s exactly what’s happening.
I’m really surprised by everyone in this thread today.
Jon Favreau is why we have the MCU. His work on Iron Man was so good that it launched a thousand ships.
He stays on the original vision but properly brings updates to the story and designs.
Ryan Coogler = Creates Black Panther. Most movie tickets ever sold, the story brings to life a comic character by evoking racial pride, completely nonsensical happenstance to somehow elevate a race of cavemen into a space-faring race. Nothing makes sense.
Jon Favreau: Makes a fun movie with a billionaire playboy / super genius loaded with rock and roll music and non-stop violence and fighting.
Personally, I miss the days of “Big dumb fun” and would welcome him back to the fold. We saw Rian Johnson do to Star Wars what Ryan Coogler did with MCU. They take themselves and their mission too seriously. Not even Joss Whedon takes himself so seriously. And he’s a douche.
The ability to save these stories and movies may just rest in the hands of those who don’t take this sh!t so seriously. Spaceships and some pew-pew is all we may see.
And many would welcome that at this point. Instead of being lectured for 3 hours.

Any different than the numerous live action shows they put out each year? And how about the ice shows with characters they try to get into across the country? They have shows on and off Broadway in NY.
Disney is not the same thing it was 50 to 60 years ago. What started out as a failing art studio turned into enough of a success to fund the first amusement park in LA. Now the parks are supporting the studios that has moved from live animation to computer created to do nothing more than save money and mass produce. They are no longer the happiest place on earth. They are the greediest one putting out as much material to flood different markets with second rate productions and films no longer working to create a capital to use to support another part of the industry. But to create wealth and try to support the liberal agenda they turned into when Walt died! Now better than half of their work is geared to political support for the DNC.
And the quality of the parks has gone down hill over the last 30 years as they are no longer the impressive I’ll fix it retort, to an I don’t know and excuse me. They are no longer the happiest place on earth either. I attended my last Disney product this year when I took my grand kids to World. Happiness was not the key word. Bad service, questionable food throughout the parks, and a myriad of cast members that either had no clue or didn’t care to get involved or make a decision to help the guests was the practice. Wasted a lot of money I worked hard for. Won’t make that mistake again.

Does anyone care anymore? They killed off Han Solo, so that was my farewell to the franchise. He was the only good character to come out of it all. I was a HUGE fan (conventions, the whole 9 yards). Couldn’t care less anymore.
I thought Cowboys And Aliens was a fun romp, but that’s just me.
My standards have fallen.
I waited in a long line back in 1977 to see Star Wars and loved it and also liked the next two.
But the three after that sucked so bad I gave up on there ever being a decent Star Wars movie again.
Since then, Disney bought the franchise and from what I’ve heard, the latest, most recent movie screws up the cannon. Figures.
As such, I’m not sure if it is because of or in spite of Disney, but I really enjoyed Star Wars Rebels!
Unfortunately, they killed it off last Monday night.
Impressive artwork, generally well-told stories and good voice work by all involved, it was more fun than the original movie was.
I am sorry to see it end.
