Vaccines Don't Overload Babies' Immune Systems, Study Finds

Kids who get more vaccines don't get sick more often than kids who get fewer

Some parents may be afraid that babies and toddlers get too many vaccines all at once, but a new study can help put such worries to rest.

It found that kids who got more vaccines were not any more likely to get unrelated infections than kids who got fewer vaccines, or who had them spaced out more than recommended.

There was not much reason to think that vaccinating children might make them somehow more susceptible to diseases in general, but the researchers said it is important to keep testing, to reassure parents.

The new study, published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association, looks carefully not just at the number of vaccines, but at the number of antigens — the molecules that actually stimulate immune response.

“Some parents are concerned that multiple vaccines in early childhood could weaken their child’s immune system,” Jason Glanz of the Institute for Health Research at Kaiser Permanente Colorado and colleagues wrote.

It’s true that kids are vaccinated against more diseases than in the past.

Vaccine rates are up but so are refusals “In the past three decades, the routine childhood immunization schedule in the first two years of life expanded from three vaccines against seven diseases to 10 vaccines against 14 diseases,” the team wrote.

Babies are vaccinated against diphtheria and tetanus, whooping cough, measles, mumps and rubella, chickenpox, polio, hepatitis and bugs that cause meningitis, pneumonia and diarrhea.

“Some parents believe this increase in vaccine exposure is harmful to children, with specific concerns that early childhood immunization 'overloads' the immune system and increases the risk for future infection,” Glanz and colleagues added.

“Based in part on this concern, an estimated 10 percent to 15 percent of parents are choosing delayed or alternative immunization schedules for their children.”

Several studies have shown this is not the case, and a 2013 report by the Institute of Medicine, now the National Academy of Medicine, found no evidence that the childhood immunization schedule is not safe.

"The small but vocal minority of antivaccine groups may not be satisfied by the evidence."

"The small but vocal minority of antivaccine groups may not be satisfied by the evidence." Furthermore, vaccines have been fine-tuned. "Although the number of vaccinations recommended is greater than ever before, the vaccines used in the current immunization schedule actually have fewer antigens (inactivated or dead viruses and bacteria, altered bacterial toxins, or altered bacterial toxins that cause disease and infection) because of developments in vaccine technology. From 1980 to 2000, the immunization schedule’s total number of antigens decreased by approximately 96 percent," that 2013 report reads.

A 2005 Danish study found no evidence of vaccine overload, but the hypothesis had not been tested in U.S. kids given the current U.S. vaccine schedule.

Glanz’s team did that, studying 944 kids aged 2 to 4 who caught infections covered by vaccines as well as those not targeted by vaccines, including respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. For instance, many causes of colds and flu-like symptoms are not covered by vaccines, nor is norovirus, the most common cause of “stomach flu”.

Glanz’s team did not simply measure the number of vaccines the children got, but the total number of antigens in those vaccines.

Kids brought to the doctor for a variety of infections were compared to similar healthy children.

The children who got sick got almost precisely the same number of vaccine antigens as those who did not get sick, the study found.

The study proves “robust and reassuring results”, Dr. Sean O’Leary of the University of Colorado and Dr. Yvonne Maldonado of the Stanford University School of Medicine wrote in an editorial.

But it may not stop the vaccine deniers who have become much more active as social media gives them an easy way to voice their opinions without contradiction from experts.

“The present study provides further reassurance to parents that the U.S. childhood vaccination schedule is safe in terms of not being associated with an increased risk of non–vaccine-targeted infections, yet the small but vocal minority of antivaccine groups may not be satisfied by the evidence,” wrote O’Leary and Maldonado, who were not involved in the study.

“For example, insistence by such groups that vaccines cause autism persists, despite overwhelming science to the contrary.”

But they agreed that such studies are useful.

“Simply providing scientific information and assuming parents will make the decision to vaccinate is not enough. Delivering evidence-based information to parents and clinicians in ways that inspire confidence in the robust and safe childhood immunization schedule is critical for maintaining the health of children,” they wrote.

Some parents argue that it is harmless to space out vaccines, but pediatricians say that it can in fact be dangerous or at least troubling to do so.

For instance, older kids are more likely to get fevers after receiving the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. And people who catch measles naturally suffer from suppressed immune systems afterwards.

In addition, the immune systems of teenagers often respond less effectively to vaccines.

Can you point me to some published scientific reports in various scientific journals that support your logic? Must admit, I prefer to get my vaccines. I really don’t need polio, TB etc.

The morons don't understand that that is NOT the concern.

Robert deNiro is convinced that vaccines caused one of his children to become autistic.

And it may not even be the components of the vaccines.

No child in real life ever gets 7 serious diseases at once.

The immune system can handle a lot but that kind of load is not something it encounters in real life.

SIDS and autism did not exist before widespeqrd vaccination of babies and toddlers

There's simply no way of proving that.

Other than on this issue, I don’t pay deNiro any attention.

Why should he suddenly be right about this one thing, but wrong about everything else?

I am not, in this post, taking a position on the underlying facts, but why in the WORLD would Robert DeNiro's personal belief be considered even worth mentioning?

I started really worrying about vaccines when my dog developed a large tumor on his hip right at the vaccination site. I’ve also been somewhat casual about the annual flu vaccine for many years because I seem to have a fairly strong immune reaction to it to the point that it felt like flu coming on. I thought why pay money to get a brief bout of flu as opposed to the off chance of actually having a full blown bout of it. Depending on the forecast severity I’m still a little iffy but take it more seriously now that I’m getting older.

I’m on the fence about this so-called autism link, but loading up an infant with vaccinations agains so many diseases all at once just doesn’t seem like a good idea, it’s a convenience measure more than a health measure. Spread them out, be more gentle with an infant’s immature immune system, that seems logical to me.

Nice one sided article. I was waiting for the rebuttal, it never came. I trust nothing from any of the alphabets.

And we know we can trust the medical industry after their stellar handling of opioids and the progress they’ve made in the last 75 years in curing cancer.

Also, don’t forget the psychiatry and psychology “professions”. They’ve been making stuff up and medicating people for years. It’s all a money racket.

I’m convinced Gene, I don’t support them and nor do my kids.

Then again I took the red pill a long time ago heh.

Lots of folks would rather not know the truth and shatter their worldly view.

I’m not against all vaccines....I just think we MAY want to analyze a bit the AMOUNT and TIMING. Plus, I DO think there may be some MONEY issues tied to vaccinations, too.

There are studies which show exposure to various bacteria during late infancy into toddlerhood improves lifelong health. This study on congruous. Our immune systems were built for exposure and underexposure is linked to worse health outcomes.

All true, but many today don't know this info and take their babies up to be abused thinking they have no choice. Also, there is something cleansing about admitting you've been lying for 30 years and maybe a little prison time instead of retirement on the gubmint dime. I home schooled my daughter, so after her initial set of vacs, we didn't take her there anymore. She did get sick after her 12 mo, shots though with a high fever. She was always a colicky baby and we raised her on soy milk. She was finally diagnosed about 9yo. She's 33 now and taking Humira. There are very few cases of Crohn's before the 70's and 80's. There are 100's of theories, but no one ever looked at vaccinations.

I think the point here is there are many ailments that didn't exist 50 years ago that are common today. Let me just throw something out there at random,....What if the reason we have so many gender confused homosexuals could come from cooking their brains with 103 deg fever from a vaccination? I grew up in the 50's and 60's and only know of 3-5 homosexuals until I was 30-40 yo. Now days, many of my friends children are "out". They will say it's because they hid it back then, but I just never knew this many existed. If something has happened to our children's environment over the last 50 years to release imperfect children, you would think we would want to know what caused it.

If this explains autism, we need to get this fixed and pronto. My niece married a man with an autistic son. He's about 13 right now and terrifies the whole family with his "fits". He plays video games 12 hours a day and I hope he never gets a gun or even a knife. Yes, his father owns guns. On Thanksgiving and Christmas, it feels like playing hot potato with a grenade with no pin.

The question about giving your grand kids vacs should be, do you really worry that they will get Diphtheria, Tetanus, Measles and Mumps, before there 2nd birthday? hopefully they won't be exposed to that many people outside the home before they are 2-3-4. The odds are pretty good, unless they are put in Day Care. I guess you can imagine I think mom should stay home for the first few years at least. Mine home schooled ours and didn't go back to work until she graduated HS.

BTW, one of my nephew's had seizures in the car on the way home from getting his first vacs at 12mo old. The doc said it happens sometimes and not to worry. About 2 yo, they said he had CP, probably from the cord around his neck when born. He spent his entire life having 50-100 seizures a day as he laid in bed being fed with a stomach tube. He passed at 29 yo. Keep in mind, he was perfect until his first vaccination. His first seizure was withing an hour of his shot.

Says a study paid for by pharma companies.

If Patrick Henry were alive today he’d be an anti-vaxxer.

I agree with you - I didn’t vax my children as I was supposed to. I’m thankful I didn’t. I’d never thought about the transgender thing - I though it was just the depravity of society - spiraling downward :-(

One of my medical providers had the seizure thing happen to his son on the way home from his vax’s. He is now autistic and until this provider put his son on a gluten free/sugar free diet, he had very few self care skills.

My husband and I have discussed the fact that we didn’t have a single child in any of our classes diagnosed as autistic. One child in my class with CP and one cousin with the same, but very few mental disabilities when I was growing up. Now, several families I know have autistic children, and one even has two. :-(
