And all he asked was, ‘I don’t have functioning in my hands, can you cut (my ham) for me? It would be easier for me.’ He explained to reporters that he’d been in the hospital two days before the photo was taken and his hands weren’t working well.

However, as the event ended, a reporter asked Williams, “Do you have to work today?”

“Yes,” Williams said looking at the clock. “2 p.m.”

Williams went to work, but her life -- and the lives of those she helped -- are forever changed through her small act of kindness.

This shows how upside down our world really is. Not to say the young lady wasn’t kind, but the fact that cutting up a piece of ham for someone gets this kind of reaction is very telling. What a callous and horrible people we’ve become when such a small, albeit kind, act is noticed. Think of it....$16,000.00 for a small courtesy. It also teaches that anyone else who displays such kindness should expect huge rewards.

1) a lovely story
2) an admirable act of kindness
3) and a longing for the time when such was the everyday norm

I couldn’t agree more. A real act of kindness would be changing the diaper of a creep who shows up at the ER claiming the mentality of a two year old. Heh.

This shows how upside down our world really is.

I'm inclined to agree. This act certainly suggests...*strongly* suggests...that this young woman is worthy of high respect the fact that this much of a fuss was made about it is an indictment, not of the kid (I call her a kid because she's young enough to be my grandchild) but of our society.

I'm pushing 70 yet when I see an older person,a person with an obvious disability,a pregnant woman or a woman with a young child on the subway I get up and offer him/her my seat...while far younger people stay seated.

Does that make me a hero? Most assuredly not.But,IMO.it does say something about how kids have been raised in recent years.Of course I'm not including this young woman in that "indictment".I can easily see her doing the same thing I do.

[How do fingers type in a void? :)]

He types in an electo-plasma field via telepathic Vulcan mind-meld, using shortwave and microwave transmission (gotta have redundancy).

It’s all true - I read it in Popular Mechanics.

Hoping I could get in before the ‘turds’ jumped into the punch blow. Should have known better.

No this girls behavior shouldn’t be extraordinary, but face the facts in the world we live in it is. I am not sure what reality you are living in, but you need to wake up and look around you.

The only way things are going to change is if we make and effort to change them pay it forward and then recognize it when someone does. Praise and encouragement of such behavior is the only thing that will spread it.

I have noted the growing numbers of Curmudgeons in this world (and here on FR) who love making fun or belittling such behaviors. Many a time such stories are posted here on FR and the here comes those who will tell you what a ‘sucker’ the good deed doer was or complain about why some small kindness is praised.

The world about us is getting darker by the day and few are willing to do anything about it. If all one does is light one small candle it does my heart good and I will rejoice.

For all of us that have served the community as first responders in wildland fires, floods, tornadoes, and hurricanes, Waffle House holds a special place in our hearts. They are the last to close and the first to open when danger has passed. Staggering in - dead tired and often covered with ash or mud, we are greeted with a sincere welcome and a friendly smile. May G0d bless them all.

The original owners - Joe Rogers and Thomas Forkner (both WW2 veterans) died within two months of each other last year. Let’s hope that the new crop of bean counters don’t screw it up.

I disagree. That is okay. However when such kind courtesies are rewarded this is good.

These small courtesies are often not rewarded. I myself have done such with no reward and expected none. An old couple on the side of the road with a flat tire. They were incapable of changing it. The were in their 80s. I saw their problem and stopped and changed their tire for them. They thanked me. I felt good all day. I expected nothing and received nothing. It was a good day for me.
