What’s in a name: Gender-neutral baby names are on the rise

NEW YORK (AP) — Whether Royal, Charlie or Salem, Skyler, Justice or Oakley, unisex names for babies are on the rise among parents more willing than ever to embrace the possibility of gender fluidity in their children and attempt to head off sexism on their behalf.

“We’re definitely seeing more conversation today around the distinction of a truly gender-neutral name,” said Linda Murray, global editor-in-chief of BabyCenter.com. “This generation is truly interested in gender neutral names.”

The Social Security Administration puts out a top 10 list of popular baby names every year based on its registrations, but it also keeps track of names on the rise in its top 1,000. Name-watchers said crossovers and more neutral names haven’t overtaken the top spots but are more heavily represented in the broader ranking, especially among millennial parents.

Pop culture and honoring family or religious history are important in baby naming, as is the cool factor. But more names are being used for either sex regardless of which gender they were originally associated with, and neutral naming has become a flashpoint for debate.

“We chose a gender-neutral name, Riley, for my daughter,” said Lori Kinkler, a psychologist in San Antonio, Texas. “We knew her sex, but gender is fluid and yet to be determined. Of all the difficulties faced by those who live beyond, or across, the binary, we didn’t want name-changing to be one of them. ... I like that she feels she has options and knows she’ll be accepted by us no matter what.” Riley is 3.

This gives weight to the idea that psychologists enter that field mainly to identify what is seriously mentally wrong with them.
Show me a shrink and I'll show you someone with more issues than every newsstand in Times Square, JFK, O'Hare, LAX and Heathrow combined. And we're going to let whack jobs like this determine who's of sound mind when it comes to firearms ownership?

Names go in and out of style all the time. It has nothing to do with the agenda they are trying to push in this article. We named ours after the bible, family and heritage. No fads here.

It could have been spelled with a “Y”,I don’t remember, but oddly enough I still remember the last name even after all of those years.

“Names go in and out of style all the time.”

About 20 years ago I was a regular visitor of a skilled nursing facility where my Mom was. Most of the ladies there were born between 1905 and 1920. Ruth was a very common name them. Sixty years from now the nursing homes will be full of Michaelas, Mckaylas, Michealas, Brittany, Brittnee, Britni, Dakotas, Savannahs, Summers, etc.

Conservatives should counter this trend by giving their daughters names like Daisy, Rose, Ashley, and Grace.

I have had two next door neighbors who were shrinks. got to know them since we interacted frequently.

They were both nuts. And their kids were nuts.

There are a lot of names that don’t indicate sex, including Ashley (remember “Gone with the Wind”), Chris, Kelly, Kerry, Kim, Cory, Leslie, Lindsey, Pat, Sean, Marion, Sidney, Alex, Francis, Evelyn, Bobby, Jerry, Jordan, . Yes, some of them have giveaway spelling differences (Francis/Frances, Marion/Marian) and some are pronounced differently (Evelyn female/Eve-Lyn male). I have personally known men named Shirley, Gail and Laurie, and women named Dean and Sean and there is Jedediah (Fox News contributor) and Michael Learned, an actress. Pearl used to be a man’s name. Names do change over time. My biggest beef right now is common names spelled in really exotic ways no one would ever guess or remember.

They should also givea kid multiple middle names in case the kid never grows up and fantasizes about being Indian and black and Muslim.
