Defense Secretary James Mattis decided Thursday that the best way to break the ice during his first ever meeting with President Donald Trump’s new national security adviser John Bolton was with a joke.
“I heard you’re actually the devil incarnate and I wanted to meet you,” Mattis said in an off-microphone exchange that was captured upon Bolton’s arrival at the Pentagon.
Bolton laughed and the two men entered the building.
In the days following Trump’s decision to name Bolton as the replacement for outgoing national security adviser H.R. McMaster, Mattis has been doing his best to downplay notions that he is concerned about working with the hawkish former ambassador to the United Nations despite strong indications that the two men could clash over key issues like North Korea and Iran. …

Bolton was a great pick for National Security Advisor. His America-first emphasis comports well with that of Trump. Plus, having seen him on Gutfeld’s show, he’s pretty quick witted as well!

I have been a Bolton admirer from day one.
When everyone else was still calling Islam a “Religion of Peace”, he was speaking out publicly about the true nature of Islam.
He gets that. He may be wrong on some things, but he gets that.

I loved the appointment of Mattis, have followed him from his time in Iraq early on. I did not agree with the prosecution of the Marines, but I very much appreciate his outlook on many things,
He has been disappointing in some respects (especially with respect to homosexuals, transgenders, and females in combat) but I try to keep in mind he does not set policy, he helps the CIC understand issues enough to set policy, then takes orders and implements them. I am willing to be patient a little longer.
So far Mattis has impressed me, in all aspects.
Leadership for many is a construct and a concept. Generals are very, very different human beings. They deal with issues that would make our minds melt (Sending people to conflict where they can easily die, for one.)
I trust these fine men (High ranking officers in all branches) with more than I would trust others.
You are more patient than I. To me, Mattis was insubordinate when he defied Trumps directive and continued enrolling the he/she’s. Mattis was an Obongo General. If as he says, he’s heard Boltin is the devil it begs the question who has been listening to?
I think he could have heard it from a lot of places, but I was under the impression that it was delivered with a conspiratorial grin.
In my opinion, there was likely more legal and bureaucratic rationale behind his actions than insubordination. I can understand where it might have been delayed or had weak action taking on the directive until certain legal hurdles were cleared, which weren’t.
I also wouldn’t be surprised to hear Trumps directive was simply put out there for political reasons with the full knowledge it wouldn’t be implemented. I would be interested to hear what went on behind the scenes.
Mattis was fired by Obama for speaking the truth about Iran. He was anything but an Obama lackey. Every Marine today including me would follow that man through hell in a gunpowder suit while dragging gas cans. He is a Marine Corps legend, and rightly so.
