SpaceX to Launch NASA's Exoplanet-Hunting Spacecraft Today: How to Watch Live

The 30-second launch window of SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket is set for 6:51 p.m. EDT (2251 GMT), and you can watch the launch live on Space.com's home page, courtesy of NASA TV....

After it reaches space, TESS will maneuver into an oblong orbit around Earth, circling twice for each orbit of the moon. From there, it will search for a telltale darkening of starsas planets pass in front of them. It will use this technique to identify exoplanets relatively near to Earth that could be investigated by future telescopes, such as the James Webb. It will build on the work of the Kepler space telescope, which found exoplanets in a similar way but circled the sun, rather than Earth, and focused on one small patch of the sky for its first mission. Kepler has identified 2,650 exoplanets to date, which is more than 70 percent of all known, alien worlds.

I thought I read a story saying that Elon is now sleeping on the floor of the Tesla factory and that he’s there night and day... Where does this crazy guy find the time? Apparently if you give a lunatic 4 billion in subsidies, he just does it somehow... Or does he? Somebody is making these rockets fly (when they don’t crash and burn), but is it him or those minority workers he drives like slaves who make those rockets fly?

Hmmm. Hopefully a successful lunch, and hopefully it will actually go to where it’s supposed to go, as apposed to the last launch that failed in that respect. As always, flying is the easy part. It’s the take offs and landings (in the proper location) that determine your ultimate success.

Yes, he’s at the Tesla 3 factory figuring out how to double production. It’s a hard job, leveraging lots of high tech to produce faster/cheaper/better than union laborers.

He works most waking hours. Yes, he has earned his money; he’s on a long-planned path toward a very expensive goal project, and is leveraging all this to get there. Not his fault legislators insist on throwing truckloads of money his direction, which he would be stupid to decline (you DO take all deductions available on your taxes, right?); he doesn’t need it, and has more than “paid back” in new taxes what he’s received.

What recent launch failed? Last I knew was Zuma, and that problem wasn’t SpaceX’s fault. The Falcon Heavy core loss wasn’t a “failure” as the launch itself was a test unlikely to succeed, the lost component is expendable, and the problem is quite fixable.

Elon is different from most people, not perfect, but I think you’re the idiot, not him.

SpaceX had nothing to do with the putative failure (there is no evidence to confirm failure to orbit) of the Zima launch, and was officially cleared. Northrup took full responsibility with its redesigned shroud for the possible failure.

When dealing with ultra-classified satellites you have to read way beyond the headlines - faking failure is not uncommon.

Agreed. He’s driving major legitimate advancements in multiple massive stagnant industries. Charlatans (a la Solyndra) don’t. Perfect? of course not. But he’s doing very well, on the scale of Edison/Tesla/etc (all who also were fiercely criticized), having a deep understanding of technologies he’s re/inventing and organizing teams capable of making those goals happen.

I didn’t say he was an ‘idiot’... I said he was a ‘lunatic’ and by all accounts (and even his own admission that he’s bipolar) then I think I’m on pretty good ground (if not politically correct ground) when I refer to him as being a ‘lunatic’.

Elon will eventually crash and burn, but until then, feel free to invest and believe in him and his companies if you like.

I’m on pretty good ground when I call you an idiot.

The launch went perfectly, as did all their launches last year, which they did more than anybody else.

Not bad for a lunatic who showed up in the Americas with a high school degree, no money, and cleaning boilers.

And now he’s a multi-billionaire... Go figure, and he’s the only one... His investors? Hanging in there and hoping that they actually realize a profit at some point.

When all is said and done he will likely make Madoff and Ponzi look like amateurs in comparison. His infamy will be even more impressive given his rags to riches story.

Ticktock.

When I compare Musk’s accomplishments to your uninformed and biased opinion, the choice is easy.
