The day began with a hat. It ended with the hat, too. Not literally, but nostalgically. Over the course of 12 hours, no Cézanne at the National Gallery, no forest of cherry blossom branches, no Clinton or Bush china, no goat cheese gâteau, not even Chanel haute couture could compare to that magnificent halo of pure white light perched atop first lady Melania Trumps perfectly groomed head. Nothing else mattered. There was nothing else.
That hat, broad-brimmed with a high, blocked crown, announced the first ladys presence as boldly and theatrically as a brigade of trumpeters. It was the bright white hat of a gladiator worn on an overcast day, a kind of glamorous public shield when sunglasses would not do at all. That hat was a force field that kept folks, the wrong folks, from getting too close.
It was a diva crown. A grand gesture of independence. A church hat. The Lord is my shepherd. Deliver us from evil. Amen.
Mrs. Trump began her Tuesday in the hat when she greeted French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, at the state arrival ceremony on the South Lawn. She stood erect on her stiletto heels next to President Trump, who wore a dark overcoat, which was neatly buttoned, and a blue and white striped tie.

Reich was even shorter that that.
For heaven’s sake! Don’t the libs know what snarky little snots they sound like?
Envy, nasty, pieces of tripe on steroids.
This comment is preciously self-disclosing, “I guess well just have to wait for the next First Lady to take on the scourge of cyber bullying...this one is interested only in appearances.”
Do they ever fathom their own off-the-rails bullying of a woman who makes them all look and act like ninth grade bullies?
What god-awful people. And I’ll bet most of them are simply dreadful in person too.
I think she likes the hat.
I had a couple of hats like that when I was in my teens-wore them to Mass-my favorite one had a huge navy blue bow on one side-looked like something Cammie Parker-Bowles would wear. My only hats now are baseball caps that I wear at work in Summer and a buff colored western hat-out here, nearly all of us wear jeans to church-and no hats...
As a kid, I loved Jackie Kennedy’s hats-and Nancy Reagan wore hats all the time-this one is just a nice hat-not some symbol or shield-the author of the article makes it sound as if FLOTUS is wearing it as part of a satanic ritual or something-sometimes a hat is just a hat...
In the left picture: example of totally classy.
In the right picture: example of totally unclassy.
Our First Lady: The best representation we could ask for.
I suspect the over-the-top praise was meant facetiously. Anyone who reads the compost would roll their eyes, curse Gaia and stop at the first paragraph. For everyone else, it was mocking. Learn more about the author.
Flower garden vs garbage bag. The dresses...

WTF? Are WaPo writers all on meth or do they just write that way?
It WAS a great hat.
And we had to listen to the “enlightened” for 8 years tell us the Wookie was the epitome of feminine beauty. Yeah right. Our present 1st Lady IS the epitome of beauty and charm. She is the most beautiful 1st Lady the country has ever had. And with that the mike is dropped.
I’m not sure some folks have even read the article. It WAS sweet... and she looked amazing. As did our President.
apropos to absolutely nothing, I did not like the dress she wore to the State Dinner. A rare miss from I believe the impeccably dressed First Lady we’ve ever seen. It is sad she does not get her fair due. The left is despicable.
#29 & #34
You’re brutal!
Don’t ever change. LOL
Left: Class.
Right: Trash.
a passable article from WaPo, suprisingly. But if the author thinks “ And sometimes, she wears a hat, which, for women, long ago ceased being about fashion in this country and became more of an affectation, whether it be the religiosity of Sunday church service or the self-conscious flamboyance of the Kentucky Derby.”
...then she hasn’t paid much attention to Lisa Vanderpump, who’s been sporting hats for a few years now (and beautifully, too).
