Microsoft's latest Windows 10 update downs Chrome, Cortana (OOPS! Sorry about that, Chief...)

Redmond, Google and Intel are desperately hunting for a fix

Microsoft says it's looking into reports that apps including "Hey Cortana" and Google Chrome hang or freeze for those who have installed the recent Windows 10 April 2018 Update.

The company suggests trying the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B to wake the screen or, for laptop users, opening and closing device lid, in an attempt to resolve the issue.

It's not immediately clear where the bug is hiding but developers from Microsoft, Google, and Intel are looking into it.

In a Chromium bug report thread – Chromium being the open source project behind Chrome – Yang Gu, a developer for Intel, suggests the problem is limited to those using the latest Windows 10 (version 1803) with Intel Kabylake (HD 620 and 630) chips.

In addition to Chrome misbehavior, there are also reports that Electron apps like Slack, which rely on an embedded version of Chromium, are crashing. Also, several users have reported Firefox problems after the Windows 10 update as well.

This has led to speculation that the bug may have something to do with how Windows interacts with ANGLE, a Google-developed graphics engine abstraction layer used by Chrome and Firefox to run WebGL content on Windows devices by translating OpenGL calls to Direct3D.

Those investigating the issue have observed that crashes no longer occur when the --disable-direct-composition flag is set. They also report that the problem isn't present in the latest Canary build of Chrome.

Turning off hardware acceleration in Chrome fixes the issue for some.

Microsoft says it hopes to have a fix ready for its next scheduled update on May 8. ®

"THIS TIME FOR SURE."

Anybody else getting tired of being used as Microsoft's "Remote QA Team"?

I have a registry hack that I run on all my new/reimaged W10 computers that disables that annoyance Cortana.

BTW: I don’t have a single W10 computer that has not had to be reset to factory after a little less than a year b/c things stop working: speakers, cameras, USB, Office programs, you name it.

I wish the B O/S had taken hold. I need Windows b/c it is the primary platform for the software I support and what I know well. But it has always been crap and W10 was crap on crap.

These MS Updates are basically out of control. Yesterday, I had to take my computer down to Best Buy Geek Squad to get a setting fixed to reconnect to the internet because of this update. More than once, I’ve had to have the Geek Squad reset my computer to a date before the MS update to avoid its effects.

Microsoft’s (imagined) response: “That’s not a bug, it’s a feature. Have you tried Microsoft Edge yet? Well, please do. We insist...”

Windows 10 also ignores your preference for programs you want as default and changes them back to Microsoft programs.

Example, I prefer VLC as my movie and music player or Irfanview as my picture viewer but after a while it will revert back to less capable microsoft programs.

Note to Windows 10 fans

This is probably going to be a "Bi+ch Thread" about Windows 10 update issues.

We clearly acknowledge that a lot of Win10 users are happy as clams at high tide, don't experience problems with the updates, and can't fathom why many others are manifestly displeased.

Glad you're happy!

Microsoft Edge (win 10) is a terrible browser. MS did some dumb things. We still use IE and Chrome and only use Edge if we have to. And win10 complains that we aren’t using Edge.

Well, it was close to working. It could have worked. They tried hard. At least they didn’t screw it up. Nobody saw them screw it up. You can’t prove anything.

I bought a Win10 tablet/laptop a few weeks ago to sort of get familiar with Win10. I still use a Win7 PC and Laptop most of the time.

On the tablet, whenever I move the cursor, the program closes to the taskbar. I am not sure if that is due to some setting or an errant ‘feature’ of Win10. It is annoying — and is much of the stuff with Win10.

==

I also have a Linux Mint laptop and it occasionally has problems with its upgrades. A few weeks ago, it got to where it took over a minute to connect to the internet. Apparently, that was an update ‘feature’ that a more recent update fixed. Now, the connection is almost instantaneous.

Linux has problems, too.

==

I dread the day my Win7 PC and laptop bite the dust.

Windows 10 is banned from a number of companies I know due t their spying on confidential information.

Cortana is just a furthering of that spying.

It listens to everything said and transmits it to Microsoft.

As it is, filenames are transmitted to Microsoft in Windows 10.
