The Royal Couple in Pictures

Well, today was the big day for Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, so it seems appropriate to offer a few Royal romances as our Saturday movie date. The most directly relevant movie, Royal Wedding, made in 1947, was set in London against the background of Prince Harry's grandparents' nuptials and starred Fred Astaire and an actress whose dad was an actual guest at the actual real-life wedding - Sarah Churchill, daughter of Winston. But I'll say a few words about that tomorrow night in our Song of the Week department, and today cast our net a little further afield in search of celluloid romances between royals and commoners:

To be honest, when a Prince of the Blood Royal marries in the presence of Oprah Winfrey and George Clooney a half-black American actress who's dated a porn star and divorced her Jewish husband by mailing back the wedding ring and has a violent alcoholic brother who's held a gun to his girlfriend's head and sent his soon-to-be brother-in-law an open letter warning that this will be "the biggest mistake in royal wedding history"... to be honest, it makes even the racier royal romances of yesteryear seem a little tame.

Doesn’t anyone in Britain consider it an insult that Harry didn’t pick a nice English, Scottish or Welsh young woman in honor of the taxes they pay to support the Monarchy? If he specifically wanted to marry a multicultural bride for political reasons, he could have found a multicultural female among the English-born. I remember how Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin married an English girl who was half-Indian (in the early years of the band.)

Yeah, but Duchess has a little surprise waiting for her next April 15th:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/look-out-meghan-markle-the-irs-is-watching-1523611800

“this means that if Queen Elizabeth II gives—or merely lends—you a tiara or a diamond bracelet, you may need to tell the Internal Revenue Service about it. Your share of the free rent for that cute cottage at Kensington Palace where you and Harry will live? Its value could be reportable to the IRS as well. If you have a credit or debit card tied to Harry’s bank account and it has more than $10,000, his account has to be reported to U.S. authorities.

To be sure, wearing the tiaras and living at the palace won’t necessarily raise your U.S. tax bill. But the penalties for not making the proper reports to U.S. authorities are often severe and can be as much as half the total assets in an account. “

Re: my Post 21, I googled the name Maureen Plant and she was born in India but the posts I read didn’t say whether she was full Indian heritage or not. For what it’s worth, I tried to find out her heritage.

“Pictures” in the title means “movies,” not “photographs.”

Canadian, you know ... he doesn’t always palaver our lingo quite kosher.

Her lovely hair was strongly indicative of Indian ancestry, but “Maureen Wilson” and the fragments of bio that exist suggest an English or Irish father.

The chances that any member of those three families ever getting elected to anything above representing a congressional district are not good. Not so the House of Windsor, which unless they quit having kids, the taxpayer money runs out, or the jihadis take over, have a secure future cutting ribbons and waving to their subjects.

They don’t need an actual position anymore. Do you think the Clintons have no power now? The Kennedys? The Bush family?

Every rich person in every democratic country, and at least some of the rich even in despotic regimes, have power. As have every rich family back to the Julia and probably the days after the Fall and the expulsion from the Garden of Eden.

#1) The monarchy doesnt cost the taxpayers. They are not supported by them.

#2) You do know that our president is married to someone that wasn’t born in America? None of us considers it an “insult”.

From the pieces I’ve run across online and on TV coverage, there was a bigger splash for this half black/half white woman to marry into the royal family than there was in this country when the same sort of creature became the US president. The commentary was downright sickening - “they are learning to change”, “they are willing to change.” Change what? The music was something else - and I’ll keep my opinion of that to myself. Maybe I’ve become a racist since we were subjected to the idiot we put in power...

I didn’t think the Queen looked happy at the “historic event” at all...

The media is promoting like crazy this Kardashian couple. Some idiot at the Des Moines Register even wrote the top headline on today’s paper: “A fairy tale come true” or something like it. That is not what I expect a newspaper to push, shows their total lack of professionalism.

Meghan has taken on British citizenship. Otherwise, you’re right, she would have to pay British taxes on her wealth and earnings, plus pay American taxes on any British wealth and earnings.

That’s why you live in the USA and not some monarchy. Frankly I don’t give a rip what type of government they are willing to live under

I was disappointed in the dress. The veil was gorgeous (as was the bride). It was too severe, but was pretty timeless fashion wise...probably dictated by the new in-laws. Hope Meghan will be able to endure all the rules and regulations of royalty.
