DEARBORN, Mich. - A pit bull attacked its owner in Dearborn as a horrified Animal Control officer looked on, according to officials.
The incident happened after neighbors complained about the dog and an Animal Control officer was sent to the owner's home.
Signs at the front of the home give a fair warning of what to expect, and neighbors said trouble with the owner's dogs is not a surprise.
"I hate to say it, but it's been building up," neighbor Lela Warren said. "These dogs have gotten out several times. The neighbor right here's had that dog in his backyard, snarling at him."
On Monday afternoon, before the attack, an Animal Control officer approached the owner, who was in the backyard of his home with the pit bull.
"Animal Control peeked over the fence, I guess just to kind of see this dog, and the dog went after her," Warren said.
The owner apparently pulled the dog back to restrain it, and the pit bull attacked him, injuring both of his arms. He is expected to recover.
"All of a sudden, the dog, I guess, turned on him," neighbor Austin Ramos said. "All we saw was him flailing around behind the fence there. He was just going, 'No, no no,' and at some point, he goes, 'Shoot it. Shoot it. Shoot it.'"
The pit bull was put down Monday afternoon, officials said.
"The owner's great," Ramos said. "The owner's a great guy. He's always careful to keep the dog behind the fence and whatnot, but I guess just this time, it turned on him. He was covered in blood. His arms were all cut up.

Why people would even want to own one of these things is beyond reason.
Over the weekend, the wife and I attended a community festival/multi block party in Minneapolis. They had a number of vendors selling pet products as well as a number of rescue groups for various breeds of dogs.
There was a pit bull rescue group. I told the wife “Let’s stay away from that. No need to give them credibility by standing there and listen to them pontificate on how pit bulls are really good dogs and have just gotten a bad rap”.
They're making a statement. A dachsund isn't badass and in-your-face enough.
Great guys don’t keep viscous animals. There’s an underlying emotional, mental or criminal reason.

Well, this owner got all the ‘bad-ass’ he could handle and then some.
Watch out, Eagle. The apologists on this forum for these vermin are zealots and can get pretty nasty. One of them compared me to a laxative, he did. Not sure that I got the meaning of that, but it didn’t seem very nice. You may yet get flamed, so don appropriate gear!

Pit bulls were bread for violence and have a genetic predisposition to attack. In some cases, with very intensive training and serious safety precautions, this can be managed. But you just never know. These dogs are escape artists and have a frightening track record of unprovoked attacks on not just people, but also other pets, farm animals and pets or live stock belonging to other people.
The breed should be classified as a dangerous animal and people should not be allowed to own them as pets.
The expect it to make other people scared and on edge, not to have to be scared and on edge themselves. Oops, didn’t work out this time.
They are trying to compensate for something they themselves lack. Sort of like "instant tough guy" in a can. As another freeper pointed out, it's "Hey everybody, look at me! I'm at badass!"

There is an article in Psychology Today, 2009, about the people who own dangerous dogs. It is online. Some of the statistics are very interesting, and they do support the general view of the type of person who owns these dogs.
