Sarah Goodman says she and her family were at a wedding reception at a Kansas Community Center when her son wandered into the main hallway where the statue was placed.
Surveillance video captured the moment when the child appeared to hug the statue, causing it to fall over. When she ran over to help, she was told the sculpture's price tag.
City leaders do believe the situation was an accident, but they still think the Goodmans should pay for the damaged statue.

The city is at fault. The stature had to be properly-&-securely attached via anchor bolts to the pedestal (and , further, to the floor) to comply w/ a public safety requirements. Good thing that the child didnt get injured. Then the city would be responsible.
Checked the artvalue.com auction price database for the artist. Nothing. The insurance company will play hell trying to justify that number.
That’s what I was thinking. Why wasn’t something so valuable and fragile secured better? Seems like negligent on three part of the facility. Sheesh, anyone could have bumped it, public, maintenance/ janitorial staff...
YES!! Shame on ALL of us parents who have EVER had a young child momentarily slip from our direct view....or, purposely dart off, while we’re chasing them...only for said child to run into something breakable.
Shame. Shame. Shame.
Should have been fastened down. Statue, not the kid.
Thanks for the info. 8>)
Sorry, but no jury in the land would decide for the city if it went to court.
“He valued the piece at $132,000, and that was the asking price.”
Bullhockey. So we are just lucky he didn’t decide it was a million?
Gross negligence... on the part of the city.
The insco will pay, then subrogate and sue the family. And there will be a great comparative causation defense for the family. Who puts an unstable, expensive piece of artwork where a kid can get at it?
The larger question is... Why do government officials see the need to spend hard-earned taxpayer money on $132k statues when Im sure there are some potholes to fill or police cars to buy? The amount of waste and extravagance in government is staggering.
You are absolutely correct! Great point!
Face it, a LOT of bizarre thinking comes out of Kansas.
Obviously the Statute was not secure and in itself was
a potential hazard to children and if it had fell on
this child the City would be the one paying a heck of
lot more than 132 thousand. I don’t see how they can collect.
I dont think the city paid for it. I think the artist displayed it in a public place with that asking price. Knowing what I do about Overland Park they might have a public art commission like we do to handle donations for large sculptures. We have a couple of hideous pieces in our parks thanks to those crazies.
Overland Park, Kansas, is a very, very, leftist, Progressive town.
My guess is the artist is very far left, and very well connected to the local polliticians.
Welcome to modern America. The community center puts a 132k statue out for display without so much as a ropeline around it. The mother is at a wedding reception (hic) and says her child is well supervised but everybody gets distracted. Sorry lady, your kid is a perv. He was clearly going for the statue’s breasts.
Offer cost of materials to settle. My dog’s morning business has better form.
Agree 100%.
Reminds me of the Acme Acres Museum of Really Silly Props from Tiny Toon’s Bats All Folks, episode 39.
You may have hit on something ‘cause I spent a lot of my youth there.
One thing that still comes out of Kansas and always will — some damn fine basketball. KU, K-State, Wichita State and the small schools sure have a great tradition.
