Why Phil Mickleson should apologize then withdraw from the U.S. Open
ESPN.com ^ | Ian O'Connor

Posted on 06/16/2018 5:25:51 PM PDT by Hebrews 11:6

I'm sorry.

Those are the first two words Phil Mickelson should say publicly Sunday morning after a fitful night of sleep.

I withdraw.

Those are the next words Mickelson should say on his way out of the U.S. Open and into a better and brighter tomorrow.

Mickelson made a mockery of his sport's national championship on his 48th birthday, and he should now do the honorable thing and remove himself from the tournament.

He hit his moving ball out of frustration on the 13th green at Shinnecock Hills, and then told a counterfeit tale about his intent. Mickelson said he took a strategic whack at his rolling putt as it headed downhill to accept the two-stroke penalty rather than risk playing the ball conventionally and taking a score more damaging than the 10 he posted on the par 4.

How many strokes behind are required to allow rampant cheating?

“And the committee did not. its at their discretion.”

LOL! You want the committee to ignore their own rules!

ROTFLMAO!

There was NO rampant cheating.

I never used the rules like Phil did. BUT the rules allow choices, like with hitting one OB and choosing where to hit the third shot from, tee or at a drop zone. That isn’t cheating and in this case what Phil did was simil;ar to making a choice allowed because no rule excludes his making a choice. He probably saved himself one or two strokes!

He was assessed the penalty according to the current rules. He knew the rule and he used it. A loophole, yup. So change the rule. You can’t change the penalty because you don’t like it. Again, change the rule. And you can bet they will.

On the flip side, it was pretty classless.

Keep reading. It also says if the offense falls into another rule, defer to that rule.

I’ll bet they would never say this if it was Tiger that did this. They would defend him to the hilt.

Watching this US open is like watching miniature golf. The greens are set up like those at a typical miniature golf course - they’re a joke.

"They should apologize for the golf course..,"

_____________________

I watched the whole thing....

1. The announcers were constantly covering for the horrible course.

2. The audio was awful as it constantly broke up, disappeared, and the commentators voices were muffled / the sound mix was terrible. And, the continual bellows from obnoxious New Yorkers after players' shots were disgusting.

3. The course is ugly, characterless, and unfair. As repeatedly many WELL EXECUTED SHOTS WERE NOT ONLY NOT REWARDED ... THEY WERE ACTUALLY PUNISHED!

4. If the U. S. Open is ever played at that abysmal place, I'm not watching.

____

And you go, Phil ........... that was pretty damn funny. You pulled a John Daley on your birthday.

The USGA needs to rethink their relationship with Fox Sports for golf coverage, and stop being so cute with pin placements. There was one hole where the announcers said late in the day there were NO birdies. ~50 of the best players in the world and no birdies. That’s unplayable.

And yes, NY “fans” are the worst.

Just as stated. The players who benefited from playing earlier one day will be playing later the next.

I may be wrong, but the course is never "unplayable". There definitely could have been better choices made with some of the pin placement, tho. 'Specially on that hole where when they got above the pin they couldn't hit it soft enough to not run several feet by.
But again, everyone suffered that green according to their shot placement. d:^)

Thank for your post. I agree.

I generally love watching these important golf tourneys. I've been watching them since the mid-50's. (For instance, remember Jack Nicklaus winning at the 50th Masters in 1986?)

One more thing that was gross about yesterday's event --- all day long I NEVER SAW ONE PLAYER WITH EVEN A SMALL DEGREE OF JOY on their face about playing in that miserable tournament.

It was nearly impossible to watch .......... it was totally depressing!

Best I can tell he had a little fun with an already bad situation. Nobody is hurt. Nobody's out any money with antics from a guy that far out of the running. And how much has Phil done for the game over his life?

"Like Berger and Finau. They got to go out in the more favorable morning conditions today and scored well. Tomorrow they'll be a lot later getting out."

Yep, the course is awful and the USGA as usual is doing a terrible job of putting on the national championship.

The greens are 10 different shades of brown and green, and idiots are yelling in the gallery. I notice Dustin Johnson had to whistle at some moron walking in front of the tee. Terrible crowd control on top of everything else.
