Tiger Woods falls just short at the Open Championship; Francesco Molinari wins
Fox News ^ | July 22, 2018 | Liam Quinn

Francesco Molinari won the British Open on Sunday, giving him his first major title after emerging from a crowded pack including Tiger Woods in a wild final round at Carnoustie.

Molinari shot a bogey-free, 2-under 69 to finish on 8-under 276. He became the first Italian to capture a major championship.

Earlier, Tiger Woods played himself into contention, edging to within a stroke of the lead on the front nine.

Woods led briefly, but dropped out of the lead after a double-bogey at the 11th hole.

He sent his second shot into the gallery, with the ball rebounding out into the rough. He duffed his chip, then three-putted from off the green.

The LOSER today was: NBC Sports.

The coverage of this tournament was HORRIBLE!

I’ve never seen so many commercials. It was ridiculous. Completely ruined the day, IMO.

Yes, he played very well. considering the way he’s recently played, but he still tied for 6th...Others also led the tournament, but did not win...Five others finished ahead of Tiger...At what point do you consider someone not “just short”???

I would apply it to all players who were never in contention on the back nine today. Tiger had a VERY real chance of winning...really, two or three swings and a couple of VERY close putts were the difference. That's pretty dare "close".

I couldn’t agree more, the coverage on the course was terrible.

I'm definitely not a "leftist" and yes I am serious. #1 OWGR 683 weeks (281 consecutive), all time low career scoring average, 4 majors in a row, $112 million (#1) career earnings, 11-1 in playoffs... just to name a few accomplishments. Also he jus got back to #50 in OWGR after multiple back surgeries

If you are just using #major wins as the yardstick then yes Nicklaus tops the list.

I do think his ex-wife screwed him over royally for her own benefit. That doesn’t make anything right but it does make her looking after just one person.

Love it when I try and watch any kind of televised sporting event and 40 minutes of commercials or more, every hour. Same commercial repeated 100s of times too.

Same reason Sean Hannity sucks. He's either talking about himself, hawking a book, security system, gun safe, life lock, or saying be sure to watch us tonight on Fox for this breaking story

I'm not an apologist, I'm just not Image and video hosting by TinyPic like you!

It's guaranteed, every time Woods is in the news I look online and all I see is

Byron Nelson:

In 1945 Nelson enjoyed a record-breaking year, winning 18 of 35 PGA tournaments including 11 in a row. Both records are still yet to be beaten.

Money won cannot be considered because in this record breaking year, Nelson earned about $30,000.

Nelson’s “113 consecutive cuts made” are representative of his unequaled 113 consecutive top 20 tournament finishes.

Byron Nelson was ranked as the fifth greatest golfer of all time by Golf Digest magazine in 2000. On this list, Jack Nicklaus was first, Nelson’s longtime rivals Ben Hogan and Sam Snead were second and third respectively, and Bobby Jones was fourth

Myself, I consider “just short” to be 2nd place, and 2nd place only...

But that’s just me......

Funny... as I was reading the above, that is exactly the order I was thinking.... but, it gets tough. Palmer was no slouch, and vintage Tiger was as good as any of them.

Nelson's win records, IMO, will NEVER be broken. There are just too many players now.... GOOD players too. It was a differenet era when Lord Byron was playing.

Yep, it sure was...

When you consider the equipment, the natural condition of the courses back years ago, and that many golfers shot below 70 is, in my opinion, incredible....

“..He became the first Italian to capture a major championship.”

Congrats again to this guy, he really seemed like a nice fellow. I gosh-darned really missed some good golf today. At first I thought the headline was just more tiger smoke, but evidently not.

It seems like it was a fun event for all, I only regret I did not watch more.

I hate that I hate Tiger because the media love him so much. There is also the whore monger thing, but it’s mostly the golf media

Agreed... One of my most prized possessions is: A circa 1987 Master's yardage book (paper) signed by Tom Watson and Byron Nelson.

I never was much of an autograph hound. But, they were playing together in a Master's practice round I was attending. Watson was standing right by me on the 7th green as Nelson was finishing. He signed my book. I followed them for 3 more hole just too get Nelson to sign it.

No other names... just those two, on the same page.

Yes, because the most important part of the competition was Woods’ 6th place tie. Perhaps the lefties at Fox should have spun it “ONLY TWO (americans) FINISH ABOVE TIGER IN BRITISH OPEN”

I used to go to practice rounds of the Masters...12 of us from work would go play at Persimmon Hill in South Carolina the weekend before the Masters...On Monday and Tuesday, we’d drive over to Augusta a few miles away...Back then, we could get in for 10 bucks on Monday and 15 on Tuesday...

I watched Bernhard Langer on the practice green give away a dozen balls to kids. He putt toward the hole, then putt it close a kid...The kid would start to throw it back and he’d say “No, just keep it...It won’t go in the hole...”

he has been a hero of mine since that...
