15 Things You Should Never, Ever Eat at a Restaurant
Readers Digest ^ | no date given | Sheri Alzeerah

We surveyed dozens of people in the restaurant biz on what they never, ever touch, whether it’s to avoid outrageous markup, food poisoning, or germ minefields. Watch for these offenders.

The iceberg wedge salad is one of the industry’s biggest rip-offs. Take into account that iceberg lettuce is about 98 percent water, and it’s easy to see why. “It’s marked up at least 20 times,” says Peter Chastain, executive chef and owner of California’s Prima Ristorante. Plus, germs can hide inside lettuce’s cracks, corners, and edges.

“15 Things You Should Never, Ever Eat at a Restaurant”

Isn’t “ever” covered by “never?”

They complained about a menu price three times the price of the ingredients. That seems small. Raw food is cheap. You're paying for someone to cook it, bring it to your table and wash the dishes.

If they hate makeup try unsweetened ice tea. The ice probably costs more than the tea.

Worked at KFC I can say the issue was not with the workers but with the off site managers who did not allow us to throw out contaminated food or change rancid oil.

“you don’t go “out to eat” because you’re worried about cost.. “

I do it all the time. One should always pay attention to the costs of things ... that is if you want to retire early and comfortably.

“Tap Water”

_______________________________

The water is fine. It’s the nasty ice they get from a dirty moldy ice machine that hasn’t been drained and cleaned since 1988.

Then there is the iced tea. Tea they serve in red plastic glasses. And why do they serve it in red plastic glasses?

To hide the fact it is so weak, so watered down, and if it was in a clear glass, you could see it was 80% water, 20% tea.

When I was a kid, and early in my marriage, to varying degrees I was compelled to eat meatloaf. As a grown man I am now in an enviable position of being able to avoid eating meatloaf without consequence.

What kind of imbecile would pay money to eat meatloaf!

I don’t disagree with the list, however some of the choices are for health reasons, the others are because they’re more expensive than they’re worth.

The article said only order pizza for a place known for their pizza.

I have to agree on the point about pizza. The mass-production, national chains hire pimply faced, non-invested young-skulls-full-of-mush to make their pizzas and are prone to quality control deficiencies at best, and malicious or careless tainting with filth at worst. I've sworn off Pizza Hut or Dominoes.

Better to have a chef-made pizza, if not by the owner.

This article is largely nonsense. For instance, the idea that a 300% markup on a Margherita Pizza over the cost of ingredients in NYC is obscene is ridiculous. The $10 for the pizza pays for a lot more than the $3.64 in food costs. It pays for the NYC real estate, a special pizza over, a guy to make the dough and in many cases a big ol’ Hobart dough mixer, a seat and table to sit at to enjoy your pizza, etc.

Also, the article states not to buy ice cream because it is cheaper in the grocer’s freezer. Well, of course. However, if you are enjoying a social outing, and a good meal can be made perfect by finishing it off with a dish of ice cream and a cup of good coffee, it is not stupid to spend the money, enjoy the time and company.

Finally, NOT to order meat on the bone because it won’t be cooked enough. First, they know nothing about the ultimate bone in food, smoked ribs. Second, bone in meat is a lot more likely to NOT be pre-cooked than the chicken patties they might suggest as a substitute.

Oh, and if they are afraid of bar snacks because someone might have put his grubby paws in the peanut dish before you, then just avoid everything except the Hot Pockets at the gas station, because a lot of cooks have grubby hands, too.

Thank You.

The idea of eating mush baked with ketchup on top is NOT appealing.

Actually if you haven’t had meatloaf with brown gravy in the Deep South, you’re missing out.

I remember fondly (not) when I lived in the ‘Deep South” in the late 60s - mine usually went one of two places: the waste basket or the toilet - if I could get there in time ...

G-d awful southern cooking, right up there with the ‘cooking’ done in the UK ...

Their argument against pizza is that it has a high mark-up. Well, a good pizza is worth it.

True dat

Geez - I hardly ever want to go out to eat any longer.

Except the burger and sausage places where I can see it grilled in front of me.

The wedge salad one is misdirected. People buy these for the experience of the thick, “meaty” crunch, that is all.

I’m not so worried about the lurking germs. Almost nothing can get into a tightly packed iceberg head.

"Free buffets"

Who knows what comes out of people's mouths or noses when they're standing over the open trays, especially when they're carrying on conversations.
