One of my favorite albums by them.
“A lot changed between the time Sgt Pepper came out and the White Album.”
Seems that way. But not really, only the magnitude of the social decay.
White Album was back to basics album. Just play man, drop the pretentiousness.
Some of the rejects from those sessions wound up on McCartney’s first solo album.
One track that sticks out to me is the song “Junk”, IMHO Macca’s best solo song.

Really?!?!?!?! What could possibly be more pretentious than "Revolution #9"?
Lennon was mailing it in at the end. Macca pretty much was the leader from Sgt Pepper onwards.
And nobody put on Side 4 since that was the one with 'Revolution 9' on it and you had to get up to skip it.
That’s one of how many?
And, it’s not pretentious, just weird. It’s very straightforward. A sound collage of cut-ups, which were big in the London scene in the 60’s.
I say it’s not pretentious in that it was the sort if thing Lennon was working in all the time with his equipment at home. It wasn’t commercial, but they put it on an album just to do it.
My take on it is this:
Bob Dylan told John Lennon that the Beatles music was teeny bopperish and they should use their music to ‘say’ something. After this it seemed the Beatles music got into more self expression (Within you without you, Fixing a hole, She’s leaving home) and eventually a bit on the political side (White Album).
Before Sgt Peppers a dentist friend of theirs slipped lsd into their drinks. Hence psychedelic Peppers.
But then the bomb dropped...don’t even get me started on The Ballad of John and Yoko.
I'll leave it at that.

“unless perhaps you mean that Lennon kept him in the Beatles fold during the bleak / shaky immediately pre-Hamburg years.”
They were just kids at that point. Lennon was a no-one just as the others were. Together they were something.
“I remember 25 years ago or so I worked with and made a lot of friends from Asia. They didnt know who the Beatles were, much less Led Zep, Pink Floyd etc...”
My son works with a Mexican who has no clue who the Beatles were. He also doesn’t know anything about Hitler and Nazi Germany.
We had a White Album Commemorative Refrigerator once.
It was a Maytag.

You have a decent idea but your off base on the Beatles' actual point of view on government.
I give you a few years to exactly understand what John, Paul, and George were talking about.
Clues are out there.
Take your time.
