It’s a Rams-Patriots Super Bowl, and an Officiating Nightmare

After dramatic overtime wins, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick are headed to their ninth (!) Super Bowl together, to face off against young Jared Goff and Sean McVay. But the talk today is all about an obvious, game-deciding blown call, and what the NFL must do to address an officiating crisis.

====================================================================

The story this morning should be, would be, Rams coach Sean McVay taking a franchise that had missed the postseason 12 consecutive times to the Super Bowl in just his second year, and going right through the raucous Superdome to do it. The story this morning should be, would be, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s incomparable brilliance in the face of a worthy young challenger at Arrowhead.

But that’s not where we are on this Monday morning.

As has been the case, to a lesser degree, on other Monday mornings this year, you woke up today to more talk about a bad call in a football game. And you should. Because what happened in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday was as bad as it gets, the NFL’s worst nightmare come alive after a year in which the officials were criticized constantly. A terrible officiating failure cost a team a trip to the Super Bowl.

That’s no exaggeration either. There was 1:48 showing when Saints quarterback Drew Brees feathered the ball down the right sideline to Tommylee Lewis, who looked back for it, only to take a crushing head shot from Rams corner Nickell Robey-Coleman, who was on time for the hit like the Giants used to be on time for Tom Coughlin’s meetings: about five minutes early.

"All true, but no crocodile tears here for the Saints have gotten away with years of penalties and playing dirty."

Yup. 2009 comes to mind, and what the league did to them afterwards.

Anyway, people should also be talking about the rediculous “roughing the passer” call that Brady got

That was a terrible call, but it pales in comparison to the non-call in the Saints-Rams game. I don't think I've ever seen such a blatant blown call in my life.

That said, yesterdays games were some of the best football I've seen in years. Truly edge-of-your-seat stuff.

Good likelihood but no guarantee that the Saints would have scored. Hate to see calls/no calls affect the outcome of great games.

There was no call, so...there was no call to review. All scoring plays are reviewed. But, not ALL plays.

If there was a mechanism to review that play, I think everyone who was not on the Rams bench would agree it was a blown call.

But, they cannot change the rules now—not during the season. I think that there will be a change to address that in the future.

Do the Chiefs have a defense?

To be Gramaticaly correct:

Did the Chiefs have a defense?

The ‘officiating’ all year has been horrendous. Earlier in the season a ref was fired for missing an obvious call.

The refs are old, overweight and nearsighted.

I have noticed over the years that some refs are very friendly to some QBs and openly hostile to others.

Last night I saw some refs being what I thought was overly friendly with Brady, smiling and jabbering with him when the commercials were over....................

What, the Patriots offensive line dominated the Chiefs the entire game. Mahomes is probably going to be a great QB, but the Chiefs got beat in their OWN Home field under adverse conditions. The Pats secondary is weak. That is the only reason the Chiefs were able to be in the game in the second half.

Blown calls in the Chiefs/Pats game too. The blown muffed punt call, should’ve never been overturned, no irrefutable evidence to change the original call on the field. And perhaps the worst roughing the passer call I’ve ever seen, the defender slaps Brady’s shoulder pad before the pass was even thrown. Horrible.

That bad call with the saints/rams took away any possible chance for me tuning in to the Super Bowl...the rams should not be there. Amazing the NFL admitted the officiating error, but the news media has not touched that aspect.

“Which makes non-calls a dandy way to mess with a game.”

Exactly...a bribed ref can get away with anything. Makes a farce out of the replay system.

“We’ll see how crappy the ratings are for this game and how low the ticket prices are. They can’t be happy with this matchup.”

You are not thinking this thru ...

- flyover country teams KC/NO SuperBowl = X millions in ad revenue

- east coast/ left coast teams NE/LA Superbowl = 10X millions in ad revenue.

This matchup has the NFL and SeeBeeEss honchos literally wetting their Depends.

Not contesting receivers in the last 2 minutes or OT was pretty stupid too.

Yes, I agree it probably should have been called. But it was pretty stupid, even unnecessary, on Robey-Coleman’s part. I don’t think ball was even possible to catch.

At full speed when it happened I agree. The replays are from another angle. I thought the ball was thrown wide of the receiver.

I don’t trust L.A. - let’s see what the TV market does there. Maybe it will be a novelty. But I saw video yesterday of 4 people in a bar watching that game eating quinoa and spinach. They just don’t care.

Pats... I bet even the Pats fans are tired of the Super Bowl and they won’t travel for this one. They’ll stay home. Old hat.

TV will do a big share as always. It should do a 40 rating. But I think NO vs. Pats or NO vs KC would have done more. The stories are so good. There are no stories here. Just players people love to hate and a team that doesn’t deserve to be there.

some of the NFL network shows are devoting time to it, but you are right this should be front page sports headline....

Millions of fans made the call ,why couldn’t the ref’s make it?
Because the Rams were "meant" to win that game.

"They are gonna have to really cheat if they want the Rams to win.
Which...they did. I think the Chiefs were "meant" to win against the Pats but somehow things got messed up and the final drive by the Pats put things awry. Not an exact science I suppose.
