Red Kelly, who played on eight Stanley Cup-winning teams during a 20-season NHL career that earned him induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame, died Thursday. He was 91. Kelly was a member of four Cup-winning teams as a defenseman with the Detroit Red Wings from 1947-60 and four more as a center with the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1960-67. His eight championships are more than any player in NHL history who did not play for the Montreal Canadiens.

These are the bittersweet kinds of end of life news. He was successfully in what he did, and lived a long life.

RIP.

Red Kelly’s name is on the Stanley Cup for the 67 Maple Leafs, and he played 61 games that year - but he doesn’t appear in the rosters I’ve been able to find for the Maple Leaf players of the 6 game series.

Was he injured for the series?

I also just saw he was a Member of Parliament while he played for the Leafs. That’s awesome!

I recall watching an interview with Brian Smith (who was an original Los Angeles King and later a CJOH sportscaster who was senselessly murdered in 1995) in which he said that Kelly demonstrated moves so quickly and smoothly on his skates that he could have easily still been playing.

It just so happens that today is the anniversary of the last Maple Leafs championship 52 years ago.

He who is in a very exclusive club (along with Leaf teammate Frank Mahovlich who did it with Montreal and Bryan Trottier who did so with the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins) to win two or more Stanley Cups with two different teams.

Wow and he played with (on the line) with Gordie Howe?

RIP Kelly.

Kelly was a defenseman with the Red Wings so not on the same line as Howe, but on the same team. We lost another teammate of Kelly's in Ted Lindsay who died less than 2 months ago. Ted Lindsay was part of the Red Wings' vaunted "Production Line" (Howe, Abel, Lindsay). Hall of Famers, all of them. RIP Red Kelly.

A bit before my time, but he was a great player. I am proud he was a Red Wing and they retired his number.

Your analysis is correct. My Dad and I watched many Red Wings games (on TV) during that era.

It was great to be a Detroit fan!
