I take it to mean that the Navy lays down what controls it wants but doesn’t give much (if any) input into the actual design process. If the exact requirements aren’t laid out in the contract, then you get whatever the contractor gives you.

You should never put critical systems in the hands of a software GUI.

I wonder how much of that touchscreen system was vulnerable to external hacking?

“I despise touchscreens.”

So do I. The skin on my fingers to so dry, they are not seen by most touch screens. I have to use a conductive stylus if I want to make a phone call.

I want leather too. Also a saddle horn and stirrups for my boots.

Well, even if it’s not a touchscreen but it is still software based, then it’s still vulnerable to hacking. However, I believe that the part of the article that I skimmed said they wanted to go back to “mechanical” controls. No way to hack mechanical control unless there is an external or interlocking override.

They want stupid people to be able to operate all the systems of a modern warship. /s

Touch screen technology not always the best. I have a Honda HRV with touch screen controls for the radio. I hate it, you have to take your eyes off the road to change the station or raise or lower the volume. A really dumb idea on an otherwise great vehicle.

I have to use a knuckle on touchscreens. My fingers aren’t effective. It’s very annoying.

I can change volume in 3 places on my car. Knob, steering wheel, and voice command.
However, that’s not a critical system.

My steering wheel is still mechanical. There is no fly by wire here.... yet. lol

If I encounter touch sceens in public, such as a casino for example, I don’t use my finger tips. Can you guess why?

Touchscreen controls work best when you can press “reset” from the couch in mommy’s basement when the game doesn’t go your way and it’s time to start over.

Have you thought about the buttons in an elevator?
