False claims online distort Coronavirus symptoms, promote bogus cures; Here are some of the claims spreading online, and the facts you need to know about them

False posts online have distorted symptoms of the coronavirus and peddled miracle cures. Members of the public are urged to follow the advice of established institutions like WHO and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and to beware of claims suggesting ways to prevent the virus.

Here are some of the claims spreading online, and the facts you need to know about them.

-----------------------------------------------------------

CLAIM: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends people shave off facial hair to protect against the new coronavirus.

THE FACTS: Reports that the CDC published an infographic recommending that men shave their beards to protect against the coronavirus circulated widely as the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 increased to 60 in the U.S. The CDC did not release this graphic in relation to preventing the new coronavirus, nor did the agency recommend that people shave off their facial hair to protect against it. The graphic dates to 2017 and depicts the types of facial hair that do and do not work well when wearing filtering facepiece respirators. Tom Skinner, a spokesman for the CDC, told the AP in an email that the graphic “was developed several years ago and is intended for professionals who wear respirators for worker protection. CDC does not recommend the routine use of respirators outside of workplace settings (in the community).”

In the midst of the new coronavirus outbreak, many people have begun wearing masks that cover their nose and mouth. In most cases, they are surgical masks, as opposed to more advanced respiratory masks. Surgical masks are loose-fitting, compared to tight fitting N95 respirators. Surgical masks also don’t fully protect people from inhaling smaller airborne particles, unlike respirators which filter out at least 95 percent of airborne particles.

Because they left off the last part of the “Fact” that states that those treating patients should wear masks. That would greatly dilute the poster’s point.

Also, when would gov.org EVER recommend something as easily made and non-approved as colloidal silver? Therefore colloidal silver must go into the same ash can as Laetrile.

“A good daily supplement to boost the immune system is Resveratrol.”

Agreed. Been taking it (and others) for ~15 years. Generally, fewer issues (particularly infectious diseases) than most my age.

Someone was posting about IPAs and 70% a night or two ago and I asked but got no reply.

I don’t think that I can get one that is over 5—and I’m in Canuckistan where one can buy real beer without a license.

This can enter through the eyes. This is why China has people putting plastic bottles over their head

Masks could reduce the risk but not eliminate the risk.

Something is better than nothing. It might reduce your risk by a certain factor even if slim

I had a scare of this after some Asians were coughing all over me. Got sick. DId my protocol which included lipsomal C and hydrogen peroxide in my ears. Was better than next day.

Likely a cold. Headache, really runny nose, sneezing

But you bet I wondered if I had just got Wuhan

THE FACTS: Medical masks alone cannot protect against being infected with the new coronavirus. WHO advised that the masks should be worn by those showing symptoms of coughing and difficulty breathing, so they don’t spread disease to others. There is no evidence that masks protect people who are not sick.
—————————
Hmmm, it would seem then, if you wore the mask back to front, you’d be protected from infected people.

Aha - overlooked the obvious.

“Also, when would gov.org EVER recommend something as easily made and non-approved as colloidal silver? Therefore colloidal silver must go into the same ash can as Laetrile.”

They never fail to cite the one-off doofus that for years drank quarts of some kind of sludge that no knowledgeable person would ever call “colloidal silver”. I have years of personal experience using ionic silver (topically and internally) with positive results. Zero known negative effects to date.

CLAIM: Garlic can help cure the new coronavirus.

THE FACTS: There is no evidence that garlic cures the virus. While garlic does have antimicrobial properties, WHO said that there is no evidence that eating garlic will help with the virus.

BUT, and this is a BIG but, garlic DOES help ward off vampires ...

From what I understand, the N95 only protects against substances of 3 microns or more. The Coronavirues is 1 micron...

It sounds like the N95 does provide some protection filtering out droplets that contain the coronavirus. I don't know if the virus just floats around in the air with no substance to act as a carrier.

It bugs me that all the alerts specify surgical masks when most people buying masks are probably looking for N95s. And it sounds like they are discouraging people from buying masks so they can all go to health care workers.

From an article in Business Insider

N95 respirators filter out most airborne particles from the surrounding air, preventing wearers from breathing in particles down to 0.3 microns in diameter. These types of masks are often used when air quality is poor due to wildfire smoke or pollution, and they're designed to fit tightly against one's face.<

When worn correctly, N95 respirators block out at least 95% of small airborne particles. So the respirators can filter out some droplets carrying coronavirus. The coronavirus itself measures between .05 and 0.2 microns in diameter, according to a recent article in The Lancet.

People are racing to buy face masks amid the coronavirus outbreak, but they probably won't protect you from illness

What’s really being said is that nothing can give you 100% protection, but there are things that provide worthwhile degrees of protection and I feel confident the N95 masks are one of those things.

You can put it like this..if you are around Asians coughing all over you and you have no idea if they or any of their relatives just got back from China..would you rather wear a mask and have some protection or no mask and no protection.

And like the other poster said..if the masks provide no protection then the first question should be why are health care workers wearing them. Not all of them have a tight seal.

When the Ebola thing came up I did a deep dig into viral vectors. Here is what I learned.

Viruses dont free float in the air. They are suspended in moisture particles or and those droplets can piggyback on dust. Basically aerolized spit and snot. Those do not pass a N95 mask. Mind you, eye protection is also required and gloves are helpful. The other thing a mask and goggles prevent is inadvertent eye mouth and nose touching. People do it on average 3 to 4 times an hour.

” If masks help when properly fitted, that’s what the official guideline should say.”

It does if you are in close proximity to an infected person.

“From what I understand, the N95 only protects against substances of 3 microns or more. The Coronavirues is 1 micron...”

I suspect that most are attached to airborne particles or water droplets.

Hopefully this thing won’t spread very far, but if it gets near me and I have to be around strangers and an N95 will give me any degree of greater protection, I’ll take it.

When trying to avoid cold/flu you are also suppose to avoid ears.

This is why I do the hydrogen peroxide in the ears when I get sick/been around sick people. Didn’t do it with the coughing asians until I got sick.

There is quite a bit out there that says it makes no difference. I do it anyway. I don’t know what virus goes through the ears if any...

I have family member that gets masks at work...They are checked to make sure using the correct size for proper fit, but not specially fitted.

I must have overlooked that in the article.
