The Problems With Aging at Home
American Council on Science and Health ^ | 03/23/21 | Chuck Dinerstein

Posted on 03/29/2021 2:54:09 PM PDT by Pining_4_TX

As we age, our abilities inevitably decline. The activities of daily livings (ADLs) capture those skills we need to remain living an independent life – primarily getting dressed, bathing and toileting, and eating meals. Bathing and hygiene are particularly crucial – simply put, if you cannot bathe and use the toilet where you are, you need to be somewhere else. Simple home modifications, a grab bar in the shower or tub, an elevated toilet seat, a shower seat all are inexpensive additions that

“reduce injury, enable independence, preserve dignity, and improve quality of life in older people with irreversible disability for complex multifactorial reasons.”

Those simple modifications can reduce falls by 19% and increase independence by 30%, translating into considerable savings to the healthcare system over the cost. It should come as no surprise that this is another area where we may have failed “our seniors.” Here are findings from a new study reported this week in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Good information to have...

Fortunately, at 87, I figure I have another good 25-years left before I may need a little assistance... Particularly when I’m in the gym working out... (If & when my World Gym ever opens back up...)

The greatest invention of the last half-century: ASPERCREME.

They just need to produce it in vats — so one can just roll over into it every morning, slosh around, and be good through the afternoon nap.

“I figure 77 is a good number for me.”

If I don’t die before 74 I’m going to pissed. I will have thrown away 30 years of term life insurance premiums.

Yep

We bought our retirement home at 62 this year. We can live totally on the main floor (2nd floor). The 1st floor is my work office and the 3rd floor is her floor. I have the Luxman receiver pumping the Klipsch KG-4’s and she has an Onkyo pumping Fluance speakers. 12 acres and I can walk to the park or downtown every day. My living room window looks towards the Appalachian Trail on Angels Rest.

Smoke alarms, light bulbs, shoddy original workmanship, contractor materials, plumbing, electrical etc...it’s all a PIA.

Agree, my Mother got to the point she couldn’t operate her stove, microwave, thermostat. She would call saying she was cold. Heartbreaking but she wouldn’t leave her house. I had to take action that I didn’t want. Luckily, she signed Power of attorney to me years prior after my Daddy died.

The author failed to mention that such improvements and remodeling are tax deductible. They should make houses with minimum 30 inch doorways, and wide enough hallways to be able to turn a powerchair.

“opening the blankety blank packaging that most of the food products are in is a problem.”

I have problems with them now and I am just past 60. Almost always need scissors or a jar opener.

That's smart. My wife and I bought into an over-55 condo community a few years back. Even though we are still in our late 50s and I can still easily bound up a few flights of stairs and walk hours at a time, we are ready for the later years without hopefully being a burden on our children.

I really appreciate having simple things like the walk in shower! Should have done that decades ago. It's just nice not having to step over a tub and worry about slipping and falling all the time.

I was just thinking the other day as my smoke alarm was beeping for a low battery,

I have a simpler solution, take the battery out.
