Florida woman ‘rampaged’ employer’s computer system after getting fired

TAMPA, Fla. — A Florida woman deleted thousands of company records and wrote profanities in her employer’s computer system after she was fired from her position as head of human resources.

Medghyne Calonge was found guilty of one count of intentionally causing damage to a protected computer, one count of accessing a protected computer and recklessly causing damage, prosecutors said.

Calonge, 41, worked in St. Petersburg, Florida, for a Manhattan-based company, which was not named. She was fired for failing to meet the minimum requirements for the job she was hired for. In one instance, she downgraded an employee’s access to a computer system after an argument.

After she was fired, but before she was escorted from the building, two employees saw her repeatedly hit the delete key on her computer. Calonge later logged into the computer system and for two days “rampaged” the system, deleting 17,000 job applications and resumes, and leaving profane messages written in the system.

Prosecutors said the company spent two years and $100,000 creating the computer system Calonge wiped. The company spent another $100,000 investigating and rebuilding it. The company never fully recovered the data.

“Her actions wiped out information vitally important to the employer company, and cost the company money and time to repair,” U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss said in a statement. “Now Calonge awaits sentencing for her crimes.”

I was stopped with my lunch tray in my hands and told come with me please. I was out the door forever. Workforce reductions like that are that uncommon in the defense business. Especially if it’s a classified job. There were two rounds before mine so I knew it could be me next.

Good to see Florida Woman is back in action.

What has happened to Florida Man? He seems to be off his game lately.

If one of the engineers or an HR person or anyone else with access to computers gets fired where I work, he is called in to talk to the supervisor and escorted back to his position, supervised as he cleans out his desk and is escorted off the property. The security guard would then have receive a picture and “do not admit” instructions.

Somebody dropped the ball (or the Laptop) when they fired this woman. She was already known for punishing people with her computer when her emotions took control of her.
It’s like firing a teller at a Bank for stealing money, then, letting her close the Bank at the end of the day like usual.

Her actions show that she wasn’t qualified for her position.

They let her get back on the computer and then they let her rampage for two days? The company deserves the loss for their monumental stupidity.

HR, the bane of the workplace.

This is no joke.

Everywhere I have every worked, the very worst people end up in HR.

The company’s IT department failed.

When it is a department head like this, the senior bosses need to let IT know so they can block access before the termination.

It appears that the company was using a 3rd party app/service to collect resumes.

She accessed that from offsite and deleted files.

This is why every competent HR department sets up a strict semi-automated termination procedure in coordination with the IT department that locks the accounts of anyone receiving notice of termination regardless of cause before they are notified.

This includes locking out their phone, email, remote access, and even removing any work laptops or pagers. An expensive lesson in how not to fire someone.

And you immediately cancel their computer access and any company credit cards they have.

You’re supposed to turn off access, then fire them.

They were following the Biden Doctrine.

“Black women are nasty. I worked with many. Rare to meet a pleasant one and I am not saying this lightly.”

I’ve had the opposite experience. Enjoyed working with black women. (except for one who was an airhead on steroids, although nice.)

Stayed friends over the years with a few.
