Florida woman ‘rampaged’ employer’s computer system after getting fired

TAMPA, Fla. — A Florida woman deleted thousands of company records and wrote profanities in her employer’s computer system after she was fired from her position as head of human resources.

Medghyne Calonge was found guilty of one count of intentionally causing damage to a protected computer, one count of accessing a protected computer and recklessly causing damage, prosecutors said.

Calonge, 41, worked in St. Petersburg, Florida, for a Manhattan-based company, which was not named. She was fired for failing to meet the minimum requirements for the job she was hired for. In one instance, she downgraded an employee’s access to a computer system after an argument.

After she was fired, but before she was escorted from the building, two employees saw her repeatedly hit the delete key on her computer. Calonge later logged into the computer system and for two days “rampaged” the system, deleting 17,000 job applications and resumes, and leaving profane messages written in the system.

Prosecutors said the company spent two years and $100,000 creating the computer system Calonge wiped. The company spent another $100,000 investigating and rebuilding it. The company never fully recovered the data.

“Her actions wiped out information vitally important to the employer company, and cost the company money and time to repair,” U.S. Attorney Audrey Strauss said in a statement. “Now Calonge awaits sentencing for her crimes.”

All due respect, I’ll have to take exception to that. My experience with HR people has always been good, they have actually helped me out a lot over the years, especially with insurance issues.
Not only that, but my daughter is an HR manager for a large Corp. She has told me some stories. Of course, I don’t know everything she does, and she has hired and fired people. Not my kind of job.She IS (and I say this with TOTAL bias) one of the nicest people I know🙂.

"I was stopped with my lunch tray in my hand..."

My branch manager called me into the office last Wednesday and attempted to fire me with BS allegation. He then went over the employee manual and stated violations were up to termination.

I then presented my documentation that he had been in violation of written Corp rules most every week for the past year.

I then gave other documantation of wrong doing that he was manager in charge of...the buck stops here.

He even left his office for seven minutes to verify that one point was is in writting...it was.

The meeting lasted for 2 hours. It was tense, loud, went to a Meskin Stand Off, then a draw.

It ended with him stating that we should let everything be "Yesterday".

I am keeping all my documentation.

I will set off a Corp Dumpster Fire in the next few weeks.

Whoever let her have access to the computers after she was fired should also be fired - this time without access to the computers.

The HR dept had a complete turnover about 3 years ago. There were layoffs going on and I think they decided to bail when they could get other jobs. The new people I did not know.

Months later I am in a room at break time and using my phone. No one else in the room when this crazy person from HR comes in and says loudly “You are not suppose to be here!”

The room I was in? It was the conference room.....

Mind you I have been there at the company for 15 years at the time. She said she has told me before and I replied back I had never talked to you before. She left and I ran into a person that had at one time worked in that dept and she said I should report her to the manager but I said I did not want to make a big deal of it.

I went back to my office and 3 people said this women had called one of them and complained about me which shocked them as I am known for being as nice as can be. I work in the Help Desk so you have to be polite.

All three said they had run ins with the crazy lady and one of them says she always complains to him about other people.

The good news is that dept is being replaced with a 3rd party company so she will lose her job soon.

And that is why you secure employee office before someone’s position with the company is terminated.

An employee should never have access to anything but the front door after they have been fired.

What I’m getting at, is what sort of company is as hostile a work environment? I wouldn’t stay at that company for one full day.

Expand on WTF is going on there....

HR has one purpose.

Protect executives from prosecution.

As an HR guy of 30 years, now forcibly retired for not being woke enough to suit the new regime, I can say that, some of the people who cared most about employees were my HR team. The reason I’m no longer there is because I wouldn’t let them or myself become “the very worst people”. If not for those people in my organization, the company would have run roughshod over the employees and used them up, discarding them once they were played out. My team stood in the breach.

I’m sorry for your experience, but I have found that it’s more about the character of the people you put in HR, than it is about HR being a breeding ground for ignorance and bad behavior.

Some of us actually do care and do sacrifice for the good of our people. please don’t paint us all with the same broad brush.

"Expand on WTF"

Back home now.

Everything about my employer is about numbers and "Metrics".

The metrics is what grades those on commision and mgrs and affects their pay. Those people are on service routes (not me). Twice a year, Corp comes up with a new pay plan for those on routes, but is a new wording of how they will not pay techs who bust their butts.

Turn over for that group is about 90%.

Managers have to meet their own metrics, they have to do so by also servicing routes.

New hires that are good at one needed service are then placed in a service area they are not able to handle. The new hires bust their butts but cannot meet the metrics. Thus they leave for not being paid or fired though the area they are good at will stay short handed.

Many managers leave after 1.5 years or risk being fired.

In the local office, there is only one person still there in my 7.5 years there.

I have had 5 branch managers in that time period. Office personal are fired for doing too good of a job that could make a service manager look bad in their mind.

The really odd part is that my branch is the largest in the country in territory size and customer base.

For the last 5 years, we have been Corp's experiment and are severely micro managed by Corp down to the individual employee.

Three rules that we were told 4 years ago:

*Don't draw attention to yourself

*Don't rock the boat

*Don't make career limiting moves

I violated all those long time ago.

I have seen co-workers promoted to other cities and then fired inside a year. They sold their house to make the move and bought in the new town...they were screwed.

It is all about the Numbers and the Metrics.

I will set off another Dumpster Fire in Corp at the next coming safety Stand down coming up soon.

I've done two dumbster fires in the last nine months...everyone else was/is scared to point out these Corp ethics violations or turn a blind eye in hope of a promotion. Even my direct DM has ethics violations to Corp written policies.

But then again, the whiz bang MBA kids know best.
