The property owner escalated the situation by going and getting a gun. He appeared to fire once at the victim’s feet when a struggle ensued. The shooter then backed off where there was no immediate threat of the victim obtaining the gun and then shot him. I don’t know the law where they are, but this shooting is questionable whether it was self defense or not. There are no winners in this.
You could say that about home invasions too.
"If the homeowner hadn't retrieved his weapon, no one would have been hurt."
"Property is not worth a human life."
You my friend are wise...in a sea of madness
A completely unnecessary and unmerited kill
Let me tell Freepers threshold for killing is about as low as my limbo arc at 64
Now how many actually can....or would ...is different I’ll bet
The man was allegedly supposed to pick up his girl at 3
Ex changed it to 6 without notice...
He’s dead.
Ridiculous
If it turns out the ex exacerbated this situation by keep their son from his father she is culpable in his death. Her finger prints may not be on the gun but she has blood on her hands.
Agreed - no winners in this story. Even if Caruth was legally in the right as the homeowner and Read should have left, this man was his stepson’s father. Many exes argue about visitation. Now a boy’s stepfather has killed his father.
I suspect “Brandishing” will get injected into the discussion.
“…there was no immediate threat of the victim obtaining the gun and then shot him. I don’t know the law where they are, but this shooting is questionable whether it was self defense or not. There are no winners in this.”

Yes, there was no immediate threat and the shooter gave no evidence of being in fear for his life so it certainly wasn’t self defense.
The children are losers as they lost their father and must live with their father’s murderer. The unremorseful mother of the children can get her grubby hands on the social security survivor benefits of the two children until they’re age 18 and possibly she could get spousal survivor benefits during that time.
The shooter should NOT escape justice.
The only winners are the Lawyers. Children lose a father, the shooter and his wife will lose his savings. The shooter may irritate his employer and lose a job.
