[Canada:] Thieves made off with $200,000 worth of butter, and inflation may be to blame
National Post ^ | Dec. 31, 2021 | Tyler Dawson

A decade after sticky-fingered thieves absconded with 3,000 tonnes of maple syrup, a group of burglars made off with $200,000 worth of butter, the latest grocery-themed crime to hit Canada, and one that actually has a rich history in the country.

The heist happened on Christmas Day, around 11 p.m., when four suspects broke into a warehouse in Trenton, Ont. After being dropped off by a black SUV, they allegedly entered and seized two transport trucks and trailers.

Each of the trailers stolen had 20,000 kilograms of butter inside — worth, the police said, around $200,000. The trailers were found a nearly two-hour drive away, in Toronto.

The trailers, empty. The butter, stolen.

Sylvain Charlebois, the director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University, suspects there’s far more theft in the grocery industry than we know about. It’s reasonably easy, he explained, to re-sell stolen food to restaurateurs or food service industries that might not ask too many questions if the price is right.

“In fact, in light of higher food prices, probably theft is a real concern, both at retail and wholesale,” Charlebois told the National Post on Friday.

And, some foods — butter among them — can be frozen and otherwise easily preserved, so there’s no spoilage that might push for a rush sale, Charlebois said.

“It’s hard to trace and track…. That’s why the police (are) looking after culprits for this particular case. Most cases aren’t even reported because companies will try to deal with the issue themselves, or they may actually know who did it and they don’t want to attract any attention,” said Charlebois.

“After being dropped off by a black SUV,”

When I lived in Sarasota, drug dealers were taking their users around to nice neighborhoods, dropping them off, and waiting for them to come back with the stuff they stole. Probably the homes were cased in advance and they knew which ones would be empty because those people worked. They skipped over mine on the day they hit my road because I’d lost my job and I was the only one on the street who wasn’t leaving every day. They’d break in by simply lifting the sliding glass doors in everyone’s back porch off the track. They’d spend only about ten minutes in each house. My guess is this is something similar.

That’s probably one of the most brilliant statements we’ll hear this year.

I suppose they’ve had the syrup stored all this time just waiting for the butter!!!!

If they’re not careful $199,900 of it will spoil before being used.

Now they just need some pancake mix.

You can actually freeze butter just fine. With all the crazy sporadic supply issues I keep about 6 pounds of butter in my freezer as a “buffer” in case supplies run low at the Supermarket.
