Vanity: Cutting the Cable Cord

Posted on 02/19/2022 3:42:06 PM PST by Mean Daddy

Took the first step to cutting the cable cord. Currently have Cox and they were charging $130 for three TVs with basic channels. Switching to YouTube TV at $65 for three TVs. Not crazy about their politics but Cox isn't much better with their Hug project for illegal aliens and those they left behind.

YouTube TV has the closest lineup to what we're used to with cable although I'm looking at adding frndly TV for a few bucks a month to get the History channel.

I'm planning on keeping Cox internet but we have a new fiber optic provider coming into our neighborhood with plans to bring fiber to the house.

What I really like about it is I can either delete or move channels that I don't like, watch etc. to the bottom of the Live TV directory. Rather than delete them, I moved CNN, MSNBC, Spanish speaking channels to the end of the list.

I have live TV provider from outside of the country that costs me $4 a month. I use it to watch the networks and sports. Then, I pay $35 a month for Sling Blue, which has most cable channels I watch. I got Hulu for 99 cents a month for a year at Thanksgiving and use it to watch network shows on ABC, NBC and Fox on demand.

If you still have a landline; look at Ooma or other VOIP services. We’ve had ours for over 8 years. that bill is under $8 per month in Taxes, the Ooma box can be found for around $80.

the streaming service I use most is “WatchNews.pro” it is news networks from around the world. I’ve been watching events in Ottawa on CBCnn out of Canada. I get FoxNews & FoxBusiness there too. This service is on all our TVs & devices with the 1 subscription. We even used it while in Iceland.

Never had it and am doing just fine.

We have more than enough to keep us busy on a daily basis that we don’t need to waste hours on mindless drivel and PC advertisements/indoctrination.

I ditched DISH a year ago this week. Haven’t missed it. I watch videos on Rumble, You Tube, and Amazon which I figure I get for free since I use Prime for shipping.

I dumped TV in 1997. I never had cable.

My parents got rid of the tv around then. Well before I was old enough to parrot foul language. Either that or the OJ trial made them take the cure; it was in the 90's.

I grew up in front of the computer. The only tv I see is at the bank, the car dealer -- that sort of place.

I understand about sports, but aside from that, there's nothing you can't find free online. Most of my viewing is educational video on youtube and the like. Prager chats, and Tucker. Those delicious 2016 election videos when I need cheering up.

I've seen all the old movies. All the old tv shows I'm inclined to watch. Mostly before I got a driver's license.

Cable to me seems like an odd way to spend money, but to each his own.

Roku is free for a vast amount of content, and no limits on number of sets, but you do need a Roku device for each.

What channels mist you have? Roku even gives you inline streaming for some local stations.

How much money do you figure you saved over 20 years — 240 months or so — by cutting the cord?

I suspect most here, me included, don’t have cable, and many (me included again) don’t even have a way to watch network TV.

And we get by...just fine.

I was checking out DVDs from the local libraries. Then everything shut down and they wouldn’t even accept returns at the library. They told me to wait until the restrictions were lifted.

Several months later after the restrictions appeared to be lifted, I tried to renew my library card because I lost it. They said I owed more than $300 in fines. I told them what I just told you. I returned all the videos but the fines are still on my record.

Moral of the story: Be careful of bullshiite. It’s everywhere.

I put my last TV in the alley with a rock through the screen in 1988. Have not missed it and it annoys me when I go into my brother’s house and the TV is on. It never goes off. Sometimes I sit down to watch when something interesting looking is on Discovery but that only lasts a couple of minutes then I have to get up and go do something. My kids who were small then have grown up reading books and polishing their locution.

I dunno. But after a year without a cigarette, I figured I owed myself a decent fly rod and reel. Still have them. Still don’t smoke cigarettes. Thirty years of that adds up.

“What are other freepers doing to cut the cord?”

Well, cutting the cord as in no cable TV. We haven’t turned the TV on in 6 months. Its sitting on the floor in the corner. We cut cable 3 years ago. Have not missed it for a moment.

Local library forgave all outstanding fines and went to a new fine-less system. Limited check-outs, and a loss of privileges until you return previously checked items.
