The combined sales of the two grocery store chains are nearly $210 billion, putting Kroger about $10 billion shy of U.S. food sales at Walmart, the world’s largest grocer.
Kroger and Albertsons are expected to divest 100 to 375 stores to pacify antitrust concerns, leaving Kroger to operate more than 4,500 stores nationwide, according to the Enquirer. Albertsons’ investors will own a separate company that includes the divested stores.
Both stores currently employ a combined 710,000 associates and operate 4,996 stores, 66 distribution centers, 52 manufacturing plants, 3,972 pharmacies and 2,015 fuel centers in 48 states and Washington D.C.

Bernie is cheesed off that he didn’t get tipped off to buy some stock before the acquisition. But, I’m sure a lot of other politicians did. Lets ask Paul Pelosi.
Corporate greed is way more preferable than government greed!
If corporations become too greedy, they lose customers and go out of business. If governments become too greedy, they somehow just always end up with more money.
That’s an insane position
He has a point but are you just guaranteeing Walmart is always at the top by refusing to allow competitors to make moves? If you are going to prevent the merger then shouldn’t you be looking st breaking Walmart? That being said, having these politician crooks at a federal level make this call doesn’t sit well either. Should probably be dealt with state by state.
Are there really any mom and pop grocery stores left after the stupid covid shutdown of entire states? I suppose there are some in remote rural and small towns, but the big chains would have opened stores there if they saw a profit. There aren't enough buyers in those remote towns. It's the cities and suburbs that the chains target.
I know nothing of the grocery business, but I do know that big chain expansion looks at demographics and area growth and potential net profit. I read almost daily about big chains closing stores, and not all because of increased crime. I'm not sure where I stand on this merger. So why am I commenting at all? Because I remember in my youth a friendly mom/pop store being 2 blocks away.
Ha! True that.
“Are there really any mom and pop grocery stores left after the stupid covid shutdown of entire states?”
A good question that I can’t accurately answer.
I thought Kroger was Republican leaning, hence the fake outrage from Sanders.
Grocery market is pretty competitive. You have Aldi and Lidl as low cost new entrants.
Bernie is philosophically opposed to an efficient supply chain.
And your daily food ration will be delivered right on time - as long as you keep your social credit score up.
Maybe they used to be but that is over. They are full on LBGT Kool-Aid drinkers.
Love me some H‑E‑B
We are getting one in Mansfield Tx so I won’t have to drive to Waxachie for one!
Me and my girlfriends can’t wait.
I won’t step foot I another store other than Aldi once it opens
Kroger and Albertsons are expected to divest 100 to 375 stores to pacify antitrust concerns
creates the PERFECT opportunity for the “workers” to “seize control the means of production” and buy the stores as a collective then... right???
Riddle me this Bernie.
How much food have you delivered in your miserable socialist life? Kroger owns the local grocery store here. In a single trip I can get just about everything I need to live healthy and happy. Books, glasses, diesel and gasoline, food, medicine, electronics, pet food, clothes, fresh fruits and vegetables from all over the world, even jewelry.
Bernie and his repugnant marxists deliver nothing but misery and death.
+1
... off topic.
Have you learned how to make your own kimchi? I make gallons of it at a time. I love me some spicy sour kimchi so much I learned to make it from a local Korean chef’s cooking classes. Super easy to make with half gallon glass jars with a fermentation lid... The only thing I can’t get is Korean Mu radishes but daikon radish works OK.
IF Piggly Wiggly can be broken up 100 years ago for a monopoly, certainly Kroger-Albertson’s/Safeway is approaching that. Here in Phoenix, Fry’s (Kroger) is a strong #1 with Safeway/Albertson’s a strong #3. Wal-Mart is not a true supermarket (the meat section alone disqualifies it). Basha’s is a distant #4 or worse and not found in Phoenix proper. Most of the other players are specialty/warehouse/bulk (Winco, Aldi, Costco, Smart & Final), Froo-froo (Whole Foods, Sprouts, AJ’s), far from complete stores (99 cents, Dollar Tree) or Spanish-serving (Food City, El Super, Ranchero).
bernie’s correct on this one ... IF we had a FedGov that did what it was supposed to do, there is no way in hell this merger would pass an anti-trust test ... DoJ would be all over this like green on grass ...
Except Costco is picky about membership- not everyone can get a membership
