Another day, another traveler with a bold new way to game the luggage fine system. An Australian teen was slapped with a fine after attempting to circumvent an airline baggage fee — by donning more than 13 pounds of clothing, as seen in a video blowing up online.
“I looked like a bear. I’m small and petite but I looked like the exact opposite,” Adriana Ocampo, 19, told South West News Service of her backfired travel hack, which she attempted to pull during a Jetstar Airways flight from Melbourne to her hometown of Adelaide.
The teen, who had just been on a girls’ trip with pal Emily Altamura, also 19, said she knew her luggage was over the airline’s 15-pound limit after she could “barely close” her bag in the hotel room. Nonetheless, the duo schlepped their oversize load to the airport in the hopes that the crew wouldn’t have time to check — which proved not to be the case.

Best I can tell, the overweight fee for luggage was about $10?
Well, it was worth a shot. I’m sure if you put the clothes on before you get to the gate instead of after the airline catches you with an overweight bag, you could probably get away with it.
I don’t know about this one, but I had to pay $70 for an extra 5 pounds 20 years ago.
The article says the weight limit for the luggage was 15 pounds. Here in the US it’s usually 30-40 pounds, depending on the airlines.
Just flew Frontier this past weekend. Cheap tickets, unless you have a carry-on or checked bag. ($100 and $140 respectively, each way)
I got by with the free “personal item” with a backpack.
Frontier has sizing bins right at the gate, and questionable bags are asked to be placed in the sizers. Bags that don’t fit require a baggage fee to be paid prior to boarding.
This is a fantastic way to piss off your customers. Not only do they suffer embarrassment in front of other customers as they try to cram their bag in the sizer, and the financial impact of the bag fee, but they are now traveling with far less clothing and other personal items that they could likely have fit into regular luggage, for which they’ve now paid.
They are an economy airline. Seats packed like sardines, none of which recline. All in-flight beverages and snacks are at cost. Not even water is free.
Checked luggage should be two bags per person included.
Carry on bags should be $5,000 each.

I did this a few years ago. I wore about 10 tee shirts to Jamaica. I always just use a carry on.
Had they checked their baggage; the rules would have been different. The article did not say what the limit is on checked baggage.
My wife just returned from New Zealand: Carry on limit was 15 pounds and checked baggage was 50 lbs. She was gone 18 days and had no issues with the weight limits.

My bag was slightly overweight once, the the nice lady behind the counter suggested I take something heavy out of the bag and put it in my carry on. Its all good.
What’s the difference between her and a fat person?

I have done a bit of this, myself, but nowhere to that extent.
So if she were a 300 lb lard ass with fewer clothes she wouldn’t be charged extra.
I haven’t done that with most clothes, but I do it with my big ass hiking boots. I’ll wear them onto the plane and have a light pair of bedroom slippers to actually wear while flying. Heavy boots plus a size not found in normal stores make them a pain to pack.
