Why are they impeaching Ken Paxton in Texas?
Dallas Morning News ^ | Sep 2 | Lauren McGaughy

Posted on 09/02/2023 3:41:09 PM PDT by RandFan

The impeachment trial, the first such proceeding here in half a century, will take place in the Texas Capitol and will delve into broad allegations of corruption against the state’s top lawyer. State senators will serve as jurors and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick as the presiding officer. Paxton and dozens of other witnesses are expected to be there on Day One.

Arguably one of the most well-known state attorneys general in the country, Paxton has called the trial a political sham and likened it to his ally Donald Trump’s legal troubles.

“[Republicans in name only] and far-left radicals have established a kangaroo court in the TX Lege to eliminate America’s most conservative Attorney General,” the pinned post on Paxton’s X account reads, before asking for a campaign donation: “Help me fight back!”

Paxton denies doing anything wrong.

No criminal penalties are associated with impeachment, and Paxton won’t automatically lose his state pension if convicted. He is suspended without pay pending the trial’s outcome.

In May, the Texas House impeached Paxton by a vote of 121-23. A majority of Republican representatives backed impeachment.

What could happen Tuesday?

Paxton wants the impeachment articles thrown out and the trial halted before it even starts.

His lawyers say he cannot be removed from office for alleged misdeeds that have occurred since his re-election because of the “prior election doctrine,” which they argue makes it’s illegal for an official to be removed for acts committed before their most recent election. The House managers dispute that argument.

The Senate jurors could choose to vote on Paxton’s motion to dismiss first thing Tuesday.

What is going on here?!

Many Freepers I know supported/worked hard for to get Mr. Paxton elected (against a Bush I recall?!).

He trounced him!

Has it got something to do with that, maybe?

This is Tom DeLay/Donald Trump II.

Can’t beat them at the ballot box, get a corrupt Democrat DA to lawfare them to death.

I was reading a while, back, many of the charges, and the fact that it’s mostly Republicans that are pursuing him, seems like he might not be as clean and virtuous as people would think. I am really waiting to hear more about this.

Paxton’s UNFORGIVABLE SIN was the case where Texas claimed (rightfully so) that states violated the US Constitution in 2020 by changing voting procedures without legislative approval (such as universal mail-in ballots).

Even liberals agreed Paxton was right, but our wonderful Supreme Court claimed that Texas had ‘no standing’ and so we got the Ukraine War instead.

It’s definitely a frame up as he beat the Bush nephew. So the RINO’S sided with the Democrats.

Our new rep Orr from Hill county voted to impeach him. She used name recognition as the county tax collector to get elected to the state legislature.
She’s a know nothing that should not be re-elected.

>> Has it got something to do with [defeating George P Bush], maybe?

Yes, that and so much more...

He came up against the execrable Dade Phelan, speaker of the Texas House and a nasty RINO puke. Worked to have him removed for public drunkenness during session.

Paxton is a true conservative. Way too many of the supposed “conservatives” in the House majority are squishy self-serving RINOs.

As with Trump, Paxton’s trial in the Senate will find him not guilty — unless they simply vote to dismiss the charges prior to trial.

So did ours. I will work to see that he does not return to the House next session. He’s made other troubling votes, like voting against the transgender bill just recently.

Steve Bannon’s Warroom had a recent podcast on this. It’s the Texas Uni-party that wants him gone.

The RINOs are after Paxton because Paxton files at least one lawsuit against the pedophile “white house” every day and he wins most of them. It makes the RINOs sad.

My guess?

They are afraid that Paxton may run for governor when Abbott term-limits out.

They want to politically assassinate him before that happens.

The RINOs in the Texas legislature teamed with the Democrats in the Texas legislature to impeach Paxton, because he is a very effective Conservative.

The RINOs hate him because he does a good job, and they feel threatened by him.

The Democrats hate him because he does a good job and is not woke. He does not accept the Democrat playbook.

This is another lawfare hit against an effective Republican.

The “prior election doctrine,” which they argue makes it’s illegal for an official to be removed for acts committed before their most recent election.

Who made “prior election doctrine??

Certainly part of it. Paxton threatens the "Country Club" Republicans control. They want someone they control as Governor.
