16-Year-Old High School Runner Collapses and Dies after Winning Race

A 16-year-old Texas high school runner has tragically collapsed and died at a cross-country meet after winning a race, according to local reports.

Angel Hernandez, a 16-year-old sophomore at Chisholm Trail High School, died suddenly just moments after breaking his personal time record.

Hernandez had just completed a 5K running race at a district track meet in Haltom City in Tarrant County on October 13 when he passed away.

Witnesses told KHOU that the teenager collapsed unexpectedly right after crossing the finish line.

The teen’s concerned friends walked him over to a water fountain where he collapsed again.

However, they were then unable to revive him.

He was rushed to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead just an hour later.

Brent Brevard, who coached Hernandez at Chisholm Trail High School last year before retiring, said Hernandez was the ideal student-athlete.

“He worked hard and cared about his teammates,” Brevard told the outlet.

“But then he also acted right in school and took care of his grades.”

“He’s such a great kid, a likable kid, a good student, and it was awful news,” Brevard added.

Friends and family are desperate for answers as to why the young healthy teen could suddenly die.

The boy’s family has yet to receive any information from doctors about what caused the teen to collapse after running one of his best races.

Hernandez’s funeral was held on Friday.

At the funeral, Hernandez’s family was presented with a varsity letter jacket, KHOU reported.

Later that night at the high school’s homecoming football game, a moment of silence was held in his memory.

The teen also had a passion for martial arts and competed in competitions across the country, according to his obituary.

His karate coach, Ashley Wood, said that she has been comforting his devastated teammates since his death.

She said he showed no signs of illness before his collapse and was in peak physical health.

“He made you love him with his personality,” Wood told KHOU.

“He had an infectious smile.

“The moment of silence – it helps us know that he was loved by everyone.”

Wood launched a GoFundMe campaign to help Hernandez’s family cover funeral costs.

“It’s really hard,” she said.

“We’ll never get over it.

“We’ll never forget him.

“He’s going to be missed here, but he’s going to be loved always.”

Hernandez is survived by his parents, Antonio and Elsie Hernandez, and his younger brother, Mark Hernandez.

No cause of death has been revealed.

"No cause of death has been revealed."

Seems like this is always the case.
Don't many states and counties require an
autopsy in cases of unexplained death?
Aren't the families of the deceased interested
in the cause of death?

Apparently mom was eating his food thus starving the boy.

Yes, Fixx was older when he died. But young runners and athletes have always had SOME risk of dying. Not a lot, but a race is very stressful and someone with a bad valve or other issue - unknown to them - can overstress their heart.

If there is proof the kid took the vaccine, then fine. Otherwise, it is just a tragedy that could be rooted in many different issues.

You forgot to tell everyone how old Jim Fixx was...do you even know?

Hint: He was not a teenager. Try 52 years old...and his father died of a heart attack at age 42.

No comparison to the death in the article.

Do your frigging homework or go back under your rock.

The same thing happened to the original Marathon runner. After running from Marathon to Athens to announce the victory of the Greeks over the Persians, “We prevail,” he promptly died.

He had given his all in the effort. With many more people participating in athletics now, probably a few have congenital defects that make it inadvisable to give 110% as the training propaganda advises. The target heart rate was originally conceived as the upper limit to which a surviving heart patient could safely exercise — and not the minimum as the PE instructors and personal trainers, now advise — “that what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger.”

Inevitably, a few people die, as everyone eventually will — fit or unfit, young or old, vaccinated or unvaccinated. One has to realize the risks they take — along with the rewards and find that proper balance for themselves by listening to their bodies as well as the medical professionals — as well as their coaches.

The formula for a safe target heart rate (maximum) is usually 220 - (one’s age) and anywhere from 60-80% of that number, but overzealous exercisers think 220 should be the minimum — and so yeah, they are pushing their luck everytime they are making an extraordinary effort. It doesn’t come without consequences — and just make them unconditionally immortal.

At first, when young athletes started dying mysteriously, the “This has been happening for YEARS crowd” tried to downplay this by reminding us of Hank Gathers, a college basketball player who collapsed and died in the early 1990s due to a rare heart condition. As the post-vaccine death toll continued to mount, this explanation quickly lost its impact.

“Friends and family are desperate for answers as to why the young healthy teen could suddenly die.”

I’m sure we’ll hear all about it soon (sarc), like all the other “odd” deaths. This used to happen to about 30 school athletes a year in Texas, with heat being a big contributor. That led to schools paying more attention to hydration. I wonder how many Texas schoolkids died this way this year and last, etc.

My current status since COVID was discovered: No shots, no problems. Most of my vaxxed friends have caught COVID, some 3 times. Not all survived it, though most have. Some of the survivors have hangover issues that aren’t going away.

We attended a wedding on the 14th. It was in a church, climate controlled, so not out in the heat. About 3/4 of the way through, there was a loud thump & one of the groomsmen had hit the floor, the youngest one, 14-15 years old, bride’s youngest brother. My stomach sank about to my toes, wondering if he’d just had a cardiac arrest & as a former EMT, I was thinking of what needed to be done. Fortunately, he had merely passed out & with some rest & fluids, he was fine. He WAS catching ‘heck’ from the other groomsmen at the reception.

Jim Fixx had a family history of males dying from cardiac issues in their 50s.

It was to forestall those issues that he took up running.

“Do your frigging homework or go back under your rock.”

I did. YOU have not. You don’t even know if this kid EVER took the vaccine you are blaming it on!

Runners - of ALL AGES - sometimes die of heart attacks. Why? Because competitive running is VERY STRESSFUL! I was told once that if I didn’t collapse crossing the finish line, I hadn’t given it my best shot. It is amazing that more of us didn’t die!

I know and I think that’s what happened. I was at a wedding several decades ago, summer wedding in NC, with NO AC in the church. It was awful. Two of the groomsmen ‘locked their knees’ and passed out (at separate times). There was an usher (built like a small tank) who trotted down the aisle, slung a groomsman over his shoulder & trotted back down the aisle ... two trips. One of the groomsmen split his chin open when he fell ... dripped blood the whole way. It was pretty terrible - we all remember that wedding ... but not for the bride’s dress, flowers, or anything else!

The kid who past out the 14th was at least on carpet, not that you can’t damage yourself passing out on carpet, too (guy from our church did that earlier this year - bounced his head off the carpet in the den hard enough he got a brain bleed & died a couple days later).

Back when I was in HS, in the Stone Age, Coaches told us DO NOT DRINK A LOT OF WATER AFTER EXTEREME PHYSICAL EXERTION

I was in flag football in middle school. We were not allowed to drink water during the game. We could spray water into our mouths with a spray bottle and we could eat orange wedges.
