Anybody Else Suffer from Alarm Clock Fatigue?
Self | January 24, 2024 | PJ-Comix

Does anybody else here suffer from what I call "Alarm Clock Fatigue?" That is the syndrome where even if you get plenty of sleep, the mere fact that an alarm clock wakes you up makes you weary for the rest of the day.

That happened to me today. Despite the fact that I was asleep by around 9 PM last night so I got over 8 hours of sleep, the mere fact that it was an alarm clock that woke me up at 6 AM because I had an early appointment this morning made me tired for the rest of the day.

Now, if I didn't have the alarm set and woke up at 6:01 AM on my own, I would now be feeling fresh and alert. It's weird but true. Somehow my brain registers the fact an alarm clock woke me up and keeps me tired all day.

I usually wake up around 6ish and then go back to sleep, then around 7ish I see the sun is coming up but I’m still exhausted. Then I do the 30 minutes of snooze.

When I was a kid, always woke up before the clock went off...because it was a Big Ben. Never have used a alarm clock all my adult life.

Good internal clock. 4 AM...all year round.

Used to. I switched to a “sunrise” alarm clock. They’re a little expensive but oh so worth it. So half an hour before you’ve set your alarm it starts to light up, very dimly, increasing to all the way on right before your set time, mimicking a sunrise. Then it’ll start playing noises, I have it set to chirping birds. 99% of the time I wake up before the birds. Very gentle way to wake up. And then I generally stay there and wait for the “sun” to finish rising.

Retired in 2008. No Alarm. Still get up at 6:00. I don’t mind. Sleeping much later than that makes me believe I’m wasting time when i could be doing something.

Also, sleep in a dark room - light blocking curtains, cover all the annoying LEDs, remove the “night lights” ...

Years ago, I had a clock radio set to a morning talk radio station here in the DC outskirts. There would be a barely perceivable ‘click’ before the radio came on at the time I had set. That little ‘click’ would wake me up. I have no idea how I heard it.

You could have sleep apnea.

Nope. BTW, this morning I woke up having slept about the same amount of time as the night before. However, today I feel completely rested and refreshed because I woke up NATURALLY sans alarm.
