WSU study: Climate change hurts honey bees
The Columbian ^ | April 9, 2024 | By Conrad Swanson, The Seattle Times

One of nature’s most important keystone species is working itself to death.

Colonies of honey bees — crucial pollinators for a wide variety of plants and cash crops — are at risk of collapse because of climate change, a recent study by scientists at Washington State University and the U.S. Department of Agriculture found.

Long and warmer fall months across the Pacific Northwest encourage bees to emerge from their colonies when they should be resting, said Gloria DeGrandi-Hoffman, a research leader at the USDA’s Carl Hayden Bee Research Center in Arizona.

“When it’s warm out, they fly and when they fly they’re physiologically aging,” said DeGrandi-Hoffman, who is also one of the study’s authors. “It’s very taxing to fly.”

Come springtime, bees that should be emerging young and rested are instead elderly and infirm, she said. They’re too old to care for younger bee generations, which in turn cannot care for the generations after them.

The study modeled many different climate scenarios for the decades ahead, said Kirti Rajagopalan, another author, and an assistant professor in WSU’s Department of Biological Systems Engineering. How severe the warming trend continues for the Pacific Northwest depends on whether humans curtail greenhouse gas emissions and, if so, by how much.

The thing that will prevent the greatest amount of warming, however, is for humans to cut greenhouse gas emissions and work to reverse the worst effects of climate change, Rajagopalan said.

Nothing worse than elderly bees using walkers and wheelchairs to get around.

I have always had swarms of bees in my California garden all year long.

The idiot governor tells us that all of our warm days and summer heat are caused by climate change. Never been this way before, of course, 1,000 years of tree rings are nothing but meaningless conspiracy theory.

Wonder when I can expect to lose all the bees?

Who knew bees were that nurturing and baby bees were so needy? Are any insects really like that? They aren't mammals. Aren't they instinct-driven creatures?

Yes, all the bees where supposed to be dying. Now it seems the commercial bees are thriving. The fear is that they are driving out the native American bees, who are in bad shape. I don’t think there’s any sign that climate change has affected bee colonies yet.

Cretins who push this dreck should put their money where their mouth is...by holding their breath for 30 minutes, they can show us all how it’s done.

” are at risk of collapse because of climate change”

OH NOES! OH NOZ!

Climate change is good for some things, bad for others.

GOD is in control of our global climate, which is actually a misnomer since ALL climate is LOCAL. Sometimes a BIG local, but yes local.

(I might exclude ice ages, (VERY RARE))

This, after a post on FR that described how bees have made a big comeback to the point there are an excess of them.

Yeah but facts never matter to agendists. They know that all they have to do,is declare something to,be true, and despite all the evidence contrary to their claim, repeating the lie long enouhg will result it in becoming the “New Truth” in the minds of the low info people who loathe themselves so much that they feel that they must somehow suffer for being such a blight upon the “ Natural World”

Must like with the asinine polar bear claims, they don’t need real world experience to,back up what they say- their “models” are minor gods- which must be obeyed despite all evidence showing that their models are flat out wrong.

When al Gore was a child, only 2000 polar bears existed, now over 10,000 exist- obviously we need to act quickly as they are “disappearing rapidly” just like Gore and his lying ilk, those bastions of scientific genius, said they would

“I am calling for 0% tolerance of CO2 in the atmosphere.”

If you get to 150ppm or lower of CO2 in the atmosphere ALL life will go extinct. We currently sit at about 420ppm. In 1850 it dropped to a record low of 280ppm. Yes, the Earth came with 130ppm of complete extinction.

A Washington (Com)post article, ""Wait, does America suddenly have a record number of bees?," explains why the Agriculture Department data shows the answer is "Yes." And, surprisingly, the WP provides details on why.

I would wager that Gloria DeGrandi-Hoffman has never donned a bee suit, nor lit a smoker, because her comments are amazingly stupid.

Bees have specific jobs - water carriers, nectar gatherers, nurse bees, there are even trash/undertaker bees. The idea that nectar gatherers are not caring for the next generation is correct, but not because they're too old, but because that's not their job.

Given a healthy queen, a hive is constantly replacing itself through brood and new bees. Bees age and die - it's part of their life cycle.

What a ding-bat.

Many blithering idiots like this bunch should not have access to any sort of coms device — because they are idiots and that seems to be infectious.

Study after study have shown that there are more bees, not fewer. Geesh.

I am calling for 0% tolerance of CO2 in the atmosphere.

~~~
L0L!
If we completely eliminate CO2 in the atmosphere, plants would be hardest hit. Since honey bees rely on plants, the flowering variety, so will go the bees.... along with the rest of us, as we will no longer have any vegetables to eat, and us omnivores will no longer have any herbivores left to hunt or keep as livestock.
Perfect demonstrative, Kenny500c, of the left’s silly hypocrisies. They don’t really want to lower CO2, because they know it is not bad, neither for the planet in general, nor as a “greenhouse gas”.
CO2 is the linchpin to attacking the kind of cheap economic production and prosperity that not only improves quality of living, but is the lubricant for freedom.
Marxists don’t need to attack capitalists and get blood on their hands directly. That has failed. They just need to control the people by controlling energy.
