A Tolkien Virgin: The Fellowship of the Ring - Book 1 - Chapter 3
by Mark-Edmond

The Journey Continues

Chapter 3
Three is Company

Not so fast!

I guess the obvious adventure to the Cracks of Doom will have to wait since Frodo is "not ready for that long road yet." But to stay in the Shire for months after deciding to leave, all the while knowing that some immense evil is looking for him, seems completely mad!!! I want to scream, "flee! flee!"

Another annoyance of course, is that the Sackville-Bagginses finally got their filthy mitts on Bag End; although a minor annoyance by comparison.

So did anyone else find the whole fox thing a bit strange? If someone is writing down the story as "history" at some later date, how do they know what the fox was thinking? I appreciate filler as much as the next guy, but it just doen't make sense.

And as you all know how knit-picky I am, you'll forgive me as I go on. The elves in both the Hobbit, and now in the Fellowship of the Ring seem far far less noble and grand than those of the silmarillion. So, the use, or over-use, of superlatives and hyperboles to describe the elves that the hobbits ran into on the road and the food they shared with them was irritating: "surpassing the savour of a fair white loaf to one who is starving"? oh please! give me a frickin break, it was the best bread they've ever eaten, get on with it. I get sick of Tolkien reminding us that the elves are so much fairer and wonderful than we could possibly imagine in our wildest dreams...it's downright insulting.

Your Tolkien Virgin Ping!

Read along with a Tolkien Virgin as he discovers and comments on the history of Middle Earth as he reads it for the first time.  These articles started with The Silmarillion, journeyed through The Hobbit, and is now finishing with the epic Lord Of The Rings.  At the pace of 2 articles per week (Mondays and Fridays) the articles will wrap up about the same time that the final movie of the Lord Of The Rings story is released.

If anyone would like for me to ping them directly when I post the Tolkien Virgin articles or my Daily Tolkien articles let me know. I hope that you enjoy them!

I read ahead one day to see how well this guy discussed the story...... He has an interesting take on it, but a fairly shallow one. I guess that is to be expected the first time through.
