For what it is worth (nothing ;-) ), I think this is an excellent suggestion. The current moderator system seems very Star Chamberish to me. Your house, Mr. Robinson, your rules. I hope I'm not marked for death now. :-)
That being said, I still believe that mods should not be a secret (we see how well that has worked), and that they should be rotated from an in-house list of qualified FReepers that are willing to help and finally, while they are Moderators they should be prohibited from posting under their screenname, or from creating a secondary screenname for posting while wearing the moderator badge.

3. It sounds as if Badjoe wanted to run the Forum, and when JimRob wouldn't let him, he decided to take what few marbles he had in the game and go home. When everyone else kept playing without him, he got really mad, and went back to spit in the ring where everyone else was playing. That's almost exactly my impression as well.
Some people never manage to accept the fact that a) they're not in charge, b) the people who are in charge are going to do it differently than they would, and c) that doesn't make the people who are in charge evil/cruel/dishonrable/insane/stupid/powerhungry.
BadJoe seems to be suffering from a bad case of "how dare all of you not do it *my* way"...
Different people will have different priorities, concerns, and ideas, Joe. Learn to deal with it.

Hi Jim, thanks for posting this. Shows a lotta good stuff. I've been away in the Rockies and failed to make a pledge. I pushed the edge w/the whole recall deal and I'm doubling my last pledge. It'll be in the mail on Friday.
Hang tough and continue the struggle. When you seek prefection the only failure is lack of prefection.

I've been here a long time! I've done my best to contribute both in terms of dollars and effort. Sometimes I've kind of been on the periphery of the forefront and other times you couldn't find me if you sent out a search party!
Whenever I'm tempted to believe that I'm too important around here or that I really matter I remember an old phrase from my swim team coach:
Stick your hand in that pool of water! Pull it out! Did it leave a hole? That's how much you're needed around here.
Harsh words for an eleven year old but there's more than a few people who have needed to be reminded of it from time to time - probably even me!
I recommend that phrase to you and your moderator board.
Keep up the great work!
Regards,
TS

For those of long memory, there is still alt.current-events.clinton.whitewater. I think a couple of dozen folk still post there.

Knowing full well I don't have any marbles in this game, and am also rgateful for finding this site, and the education I've gained from FR, I still believe that the Moderator situation as presently configured is untenable. You have access to approximately 3000 distinct posters a day, of which at least 10% can responsibly and artfully perform the duties necessary to moderate the threads.
When John Robinson first posted the threads asking for input on the new feature of moderators, many good Freepers strongly opposed the idea. The collective response of the naysayers criticisms has come to pass. FR needs a shot of Populism in it's Moderation functions! To that end I agree with Registered's comments, and would like to add that pulled threads should be available for anyone to read, if the thread is specifically called up through some new mechanism like a holding bin for some limited amount of time. Again, trust the forum participants, trust the populist wisdom here. Give the people a feedback mechanism to counterbalance overbearing Moderators, without you having to police every squabble.

I have no clue where the truth lies here or who's right/wrong. But what is apparent is that there are hangers-on in any successful startup, and one must be wary that "loyal" supporters, aren't always.

I know nothing, at least until now, about what goes on behind the scenes, but I do know you Jim. I can say with all true honesty that none of the things you are accused of fit the man that I know.
As for the mods, since we now know who they are, I have no complaints whatsoever. I would imagine moderating and playing referee to this large forum ain't easy. There are those who push the abuse button every time someone sneezes at them I am sure. There should be more room for differences of opinions, but it isn't the mods fault, it some of the posters who take things just a bit too seriously at times, and should just ignore things a little more and move on!
I only met BADJOE once, a nice enough guy, but it sounds like some people can't handle a little bit of authority, they think they ARE FREEREPUBLIC, and not just one of thousands who happen to post and have an added responsibility they have agreed to do. Jealousy seems to be a driving factor behind some of the conflicts.
The last thing I will say, in this way too long post is this. Too many people here have forgotten the purpose of this forum, it is to defeat the liberals, not each other. When grown adults squabble among themselves for all of the world to see, and believe me, they are watching as you well know, then all we are doing is giving aid and comfort to the real enemy, SOCIALISM. Those who think "RINOS" are promoting social programs, ain't seen socialism at it's worst yet, but if we can't agree for the most part with each other, and work together to promote our various beliefs, I fear we are going to find out just how ugly socialism and treason really are. (My essay is longer than BADJOES!) But then, no one ever said I was shy! :-)
