On the one hand some sort of moderation is necessary to maintain the character of the site--its family-friendliness and its political conservatism. Without that, what is the point? Without that, why would people read the threads?

OTOH moderation should IMHO allow some scope, at least, for Freepers to flex their muscles debating a limited number of less-than-conservative people, so be that they aren't abusive and/or presumptious. They, as we all, do post at the pleasure of the site management for the reasons noted above.

Whole thing puts me in mind of Baptist churches, which are notorious for developing splits and spinoff congregations. For similar reasons to what you are seeing--that is, for reasons that people not party to the split have a hard time understanding.

Does this fall into the category of farewell "opus"?

I suppose BadJoe will continue as a lurker ... FreeRepublic is a hard habit to break. One that I will continue to indulge in.

CONTINUE TO MARCH!

That's it! No matter what our differences we have to stay united for the conservative cause. A splinter here, a splinter there...before you know it we've got a pile of sawdust...and socialism wins.

.

Over my dead body! Now more than ever we've got to hold ranks...I'm even in favor of this thread getting pulled. Imagine the entertainment value to a DU'er or someone of that ilk!

I have been an active Freeper and donor for over 5 years, and have never run afoul of the mods or gotten threads pulled, etc. For those of us who "work hard and play by the rules" (ha!), Free Republic has been an oasis and a pleasure (and addiction, but that is another story ...).

There are periods when I've been a (temporary) ex-Freeper, particularly about 4 years ago when there were an overwhelming number of threads about how George Bush was a drug importer/dealer/pusher, etc., but I have always put my toe in the water to see if the forum had engaged in the periodic self-cleaning necessary as an organization goes from the brain child of one person to one serving thousands.

My great kudos and respect to you, Jim Rob, for making this an outpost of sanity (during the Clinton years), fellowship and friendship.

My conclusions. One cannot rely on Jim to tell the truth. Freepers are not given the benefit of the doubt. There is no review process of Moderator action. Jim does not have any principles or convictions Jim is not an honest nor an honorable man. Jim is not a man of his word. FR has outgrown his ability to handle it. Jim says he loves me like a brother. Right! Like Cain loved Abel.

Badjoe: Assuming that everything you are saying is factual. Your conclusions do not support the facts. What you are basically describing is bad management practices that have allowed to much power to MAF, who you assert is bad for FR. From that it simply does not follow the nasty things that you conclude about JimRob.

Just a note from someone thats been kicking around here for a long time. I seldom post, donate when I can, but check in a half dozen times a day for the lastest news and information on the best conservative site on the web.

I thank Mr. Robinson for his efforts and hard work keeping this forum active, and suggest those upset with his work leave tonight.

Jim, you have a wonderful accomplishment here, and I thank you. Don't let a few spoil your well deserved success.

i still HATE IT when FRIENDS

end up hostile to one another or even 'merely' disenchanted with one another.

Life is so short and shared caring and values rare enough . . . it is just enormously sad to me.

That being said, I still believe that mods should not be a secret (we see how well that has worked), and that they should be rotated from an in-house list of qualified FReepers that are willing to help and finally, while they are Moderators they should be prohibited from posting under their screenname, or from creating a secondary screenname for posting while wearing the moderator badge.
To me, a moderator is a referee, to allow the ref to play, and play as an unidentified ref, is not fair, and only creates a feeling of bias.

Well said, - and a good idea.

Needless to say, ideas like it were rejected out of hand shortly after the mods first became a problem.. No doubt they will be ignored now..
Which is a shame..

FR shoulda been a contender..

Not a bad idea to a point. I'd still hate to see truly needy conservatives not be able to post because of it.

Perhaps there'd be a clever way to encourage some sort of sliding scale?

Sour grapes for sure. While Im sure BadJoes efforts were appreciated, the fact remains that it is JimRobs site. And he can do with it whatever he wants. The only mod action I have ever seen are the zotting of the trolls.(I love the fact they use "The Immigrant Song" as their anthem!) And one time when I used profanity regarding a guy who wore a "Suspected Terrorist" button at the airport. I objected strenuously to what this guy was doing and expressed my displeasure by calling him an a**h*le five times. The next day I got a freepmail from a mod telling they had pulled my posts because of profanity, and not to do it again. And I wont. The rules say no profanity, and I used it.It could have brought a banning I guess, but all they did was pull the posts and warn me. I hang here on this forum(If one can "hang" in cyberspace,) and couldnt imagine not having it. As a result Im a monthly donor. I guess the point Im trying to make is, when you are in someone elses house, you play by their rules..
