"Insourcing illegals to undercut the wage market power of american citizens has one significant hurdle: licenses."

Good point, but I thought slavery was outlawed after the civil war?

That can't be right. Jeb supports a migrant worker program which would make them legal aliens and if they are here legally and are allowed to drive, then they should be licensed PROVIDING there is clear indication on the license of the immigration status of the holder. Let's hope this Dan Stein guy has it wrong. There isn't much substance to his report.

Please tell me that you just forgot the sarcasm flag!

And illegal labor does nothing for us economically. We end up subsidizing the lower wages with free education, free health care, and other welfare. And it allows inefficient businesses to stay in business and discourages productivity improvements such as automation.

Yeah, the fruit picking jobs are being snapped up by US citizens left and right down here ... NOT. There are legitimate jobs for migrant workers in the US and pretending otherwise is avoiding reality. Having a specific program to registed, monitor, and control these workers only makes sense. It is an element of controlling your borders.

As to the outsourcing canard, pulllleeeeezzze.

No. The funny thing is that the Republicans tried to push a gas tax decrease twice before...but all the Democrats and some of the RINOs squashed it.

Now the dems are pushing for a tax decrease and it suddenly looks like their idea. Jeesh. It's pretty humorous really. It came out of nowhere and slapped all the PUBS right in the kisser.

"& you STILL want to vote for them"

You Bet!!
Beats the HE** out of the alternatives by a long shot!!

I vote to have them arrested and deported as soon as they're told to "Look Into The Camera" for the photo ID though.

It's not the fruitpicker industry behind the nationwide "licenses for illegals" campaign. It's the transportation and insurance industries.

If we needed fruit pickers, so be it. These license schemes are not limited to fruit pickers. The ambition is much greater than that.

See the NYT's "In Florida Groves, Cheap Labor Means Machines". It goes into the politics of attempts to stop mechanization of agriculture.

Apparently Jeb Bush doesn't want to be President.

Maybe, but all we have is a blurb on a blog saying Jeb is in favor of this for illegals and I'd like to see some substance to that before we slime Jeb and hand a nice little controversy over to the DUmmies and RATs. If there are links, then post them. Otherwise, there is more conclusion jumping going on here than wetbacks jumping the Rio Grande.

Bush reportely commented that illegal immigrants should be kept out of the country, but once they are here they shouldn't be ignored.

When I read this in the brief article, I took it to mean that the FL state govt wants to know who is in this state -- meaning, people can not hide out here. And, while I have not read anything else about this matter, and I think some people make good points on this thread, I know that FL has just recently completely overhauled its driver licenses.

So, in a way, with these new bar-code licenses, maybe Gov Bush is instituting some sort of tracking system for illegals, without actually saying that, via these new licenses. I am totally guessing here, but I would believe a motive concerning Gov Bush that has to do with security more than any other motive.

Hmmm...I'd take this with a grain of salt. I've never heard of this site before, and I find it hard to believe that the mainstream media wouldn't be beating this drum for all that it's worth in order to turn us right-inclined folks against Jeb and his brother.

It could be true, but I'm skeptical.

Dan Stein is the executive director of FAIR (Federation for American Immigration Reform), one of the main groups opposing massive immigration. You can see them quoted in newspaper articles, etc. etc. That's from his blog. See this for more on FAIR: http://www.fairus.org/About/AboutMain.cfm

Remember the group that protested at Rove's house? They did the same thing at FAIR's office last year: http://www.usnewswire.com/topnews/qtr2_2003/0602-106.html

The reason fruit picking jobs are not filled by US workers is because the land owners will not pay a fair wage competitive to US standards, or invest in modern automated equipment. Slave wages and back breaking labor should be illegal, otherwise we are discounting all of ancestors who died in the civil war to end greed of low to next to nothing wages.

The Stein Report (Dan Stein of FAIR)?

I'll believe it when I read a press release from a more credible source.

He likes Drudge Report's formatting, that much is obvious.
