Bush made that commment before anyone knew who made up the minutemen. That was before they ever went to the border.

Can we ever put anything into context.

GW's position on illegals has not changed since that article was written. Even his speech a couple of days ago was the same ole amnesty, but lets not call it that.

He certainly hasn't endorsed the Minutemen, has he?

I totally agree, but that is unfortunately not what I expect to happen. The candidate that gets through the primary will likely not be able to appeal to the far right and they usually stay home as they have in the past, and the independents who have been growing fast lately, will got for their individual favorite....whoever that might be.

It will be a repeat of what happened when Clinton got his first term with a minority vote.

If things stay as they are now, it will happen. A lot depends on events in Iraq however. We shall see as we get closer to 08. I think we will see a taste of it in 06 though. I disagree with the pundits who believe we are safe in 06. We are not,(we are never really safe) but I don't expect more than 10 seats to be at risk. This is the statistical norm.

"Bush made that commment before anyone knew who made up the minutemen."

santorumlite... please post here on the board for us to see Bush's apology. I for one think the Minutemen are leading the way on the border problem. If anything good comes before the election it will be because of what the Minutemen have and are doing for us.

Still, please post the apology or where Bush feels different... if not then you shouldn't be attacking me for using this article. I suspect you are an #$%-kissing sheeple

Good grief, this article is a year old. I vaguely remember some hoopla because Bush claimed he had been misquoted.

"The article is a friggin year old."

Everybody reading down to yor post knows the article is a year old... like an anniversary of sorts. What happens when you forget your anniversary? Anyway... the point is not the age of the article it is the thought conveyed in the article. Thats what we should be talking about here.

That's why you forgot to put the article's date beside the title, right? I guess that would have been too..............honest?

" That's why you forgot to put the article's date beside the title, right?"

No actually the date is right there in parenthesis. Please macamadamia nut... quit trying to avoid the intent of the article. The date doesn't matter. I am pushing for a shutdown of illegal immigration. I want a fence. I live in Fresno CA. I can compute simple math. My taxes are paying for lots of problems related to illegal immigration. I don't care when the article was written IF nothing has changed. I am here to force a change.

You understand that FR's want to read new news, new articles on current events. You should have run with that article you posted a link to in the reply to me, instead you let the article become about you and the date of the old article.

The president just spoke on this issue. You could have found that article also and run with it if others hadn't already done so.

Most of us are against illegal immigration. Most of us do not think slandering the president to make a point on the issue moves the issue forward. We strive for constructive criticism. Now some thinks you're a troll and the thread is useless. Live and learn.

Are you seriously suggesting that the date was there all along?! Obviously, it was added later because others were complaining. So, again you're being DISHONEST! But I guess you think you're allowed to be sly because the content of the article warrants it.

"I'm against vigilantes in the United States of America," Mr. Bush said at a joint press conference. "I'm for enforcing the law in a rational way."

The Minutemen aren't vigilantes. They are merely helping direct the border patrol to those who are breaking the law. They do not take the law into their own hands and they don't break the law by their actions.

I had thought that Bush realized his mistake after referring to the Minutemen as vigilantes before. Unless this quote is being taken out of context, that doesn't appear to be the case.

Does anyone have more information on what Bush said? I'd like to make sure the Washington Times is presenting this in an honest fashion.

I don't know how long the date was there... when you complained I went to check and saw it. All right you caught me... I am an ultra-liberal 'Rat who posts extremely right wing stuff here everyday. Like the post I just sent saying Laura Ingram "hit one out of the ballpark" talking about reporters in Iraq.

Here are the facts:
I have never considered voting for a 'Rat
I have voted for W twice
I like W
I support efforts in Iraq although I don't think Islam is gonna allow anything positive in Middle East
I have issues with Prez on the border
I live in Cali and see the prob first hand
I want a fence
I Respect the Minutemen
W hasn't done anything about border yet and so I have doubts about his resolve
If the dems take this issue then we have problems
I don't like V. Fox
The border issue is a security issue as well

President Participates in Meeting on Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Here is a recent article on immigration by the president....

Excerpt:
THE PRESIDENT: I've just had a very constructive and important dialogue with members of the agricultural community, the faith community, the concerned citizen community about immigration. Ours is a nation of law and ours is a nation of immigrants, and we believe that we can have rational, important immigration policy that's based upon law and reflects our deep desire to be a compassionate and decent nation.

President George W. Bush speaks with participants in a meeting on immigration reform Thursday, March 23, 2006, in the Roosevelt Room of the White House. White House photo by Eric Draper Our government must enforce our borders; we've got plans in place to do so. But part of enforcing our borders is to have a guest worker program that encourages people to register their presence so that we know who they are, and says to them, if you're doing a job an American won't do, you're welcome here for a period of time to do that job.

The immigration debate is a vital debate for our country. It's important that we have a serious debate, one that discusses the issues. But I urge members of Congress and I urge people who like to comment on this issue to make sure the rhetoric is in accord with our traditions. I look around the table and I recognize that we've got people from different backgrounds, different heritages. We all may have different family histories, but we all sit around this table as Americans.

And, therefore, when we conduct this debate it must be done in a civil way. It must be done in a way that brings dignity to the process. It must be done in a way that doesn't pit one group of people against another. It must be done in a way that recognizes our history. I think now is the time for the United States Congress to act to get an immigration plan that is comprehensive and rational and achieves important objectives.
