Bush will win on Immigration to save the Republican Party.

Posted on 03/27/2006 9:53:41 AM PST by Pukin Dog

Just a little dose of reality for some of you going nuts over the Immigration issue, because there is NO chance that you will win on the border enforcement issue. No chance whatsoever. Only after a migrant worker program passes, making most of these illegal aliens legal, is there any chance at all to have meaningful border enforcement.

Bush is not running for office anymore, but the Republican Congress is in need of a big victory in November. This issue will kill our chances to maintain the majority, and knowing that, Bush will likely veto any bill making illegal immigration a felony, if that bill does not include the migrant worker program (call it amnesty if you want) needed to hold onto Business and Hispanic support for the Republican Party.

The Illegal Immigration Genie is out of the bottle, folks. You can’t stuff her back in without losing the House and/or Senate in November. Pragmatic minds will rule in the end, and that is a bitter pill you best swallow now.

FReepers can’t will elections for the Republican Party, but we sure can go a long way towards losing them, if we can’t put our common sense ahead of our passions on this issue. I live in San Diego County, and I see the problems with illegal immigration on a daily basis.

Whether you like it or not, much of the commerce of this country does depend on these folks to do jobs that Americans won’t do for the prevailing wage.

So, you have a choice, you can demand the border enforcement bills on their own, or you can swallow hard and consider everything you will lose if we turn off 10-15% of the electorate, in addition to the business community that depends on these workers. Yeah, they broke the law, and so do the people who hire them.

So what?

Yeah, I said it, SO WHAT? The time to be worried about that was when there were REAL Republican majorities in the Border States. It is too late now. This is a problem that cannot be solved, but only managed.

It is possible to be right and stupid at the same time. Pete Wilson tried this a few years ago, got all kinds of support for it. It passed, and Pete Wilson is gone. Then a judge overturned it anyway. That is exactly what you can expect to happen with these current bills as well. Some judge will put an injunction on enforcement, but by the time that happens, we will be knee-deep into impeachment proceeding under a Democrat Congress.

Bush won’t let that happen, neither will smarter members of the Senate and House. You won’t win, you can’t win, but you can shoot yourself and the Republican party in the head (even if you are not a member) by pursuing a program that does not include amnesty or whatever you want to call it.

We lost this one.

Get over it. There are bigger battles ahead.

Sorry P.D. but I can't agree with you on this issue. Compromising the basic principle of national sovereignty by appeasing the illegal behavior of 10-12 million alien invaders is a clear sign of national weakness and will be exploited on an increasing basis until it is stopped or until it takes control.

You may very well be correct in the expected outcome of this tragedy. I pray you are wrong. However, at some point in the coming years this nation is going to have to decide if it wants to continue being the sovereign United States of America or whether it wants to become a part of a larger North American Political and Economic Confederacy. I stand with the former. - OB1

how do you propose getting rid of 20 million people????, where do you hold them, how do you transport them???

From Michael Savage's Liberalism is a Mental Disorder pg. 83:

"Fifth, launch Operation Alien Airlines. Round up all illegal aliens (take the low number of 12 million) and fly them home. If you calculate the high cost per ticket at $250, that comes to $3 billion -- little more than it costs to provide Medicaid benefits to the children of illegal aliens for one year. I'm sure United, Delta, and USAIR wouldn't mind the extra business. And it might keep them from falling into bankruptcy."

Not that I approve this necessarily. Just an idea for you to think about.

They are NOT even TRYING to stop the illegal invasion from the southern border. It is encouraged by the (R) President Bush.

I am a longtime Republican but I would rather see nothing but D in office rather than surrender to the suggestions put forth by Pukin Dog.

"There is no way an employer can prove that a person is illegal."

BS. I am an employer and for about 30 bucks I can find out if you're here legally or not.

"You made a few statements yourself, care to give me links to your statements? I thought not. Usually the people who ask for links can support their own claims and try to lay it on to the replier. ILLEGALS are killing this country, we import crime, disease and terrorist. Can you prove we don't?"

I don't recall citing any statistics. You did. If I read a statistic like that on FR, I think I'd want to know about its validity.

You're begging the question. Illegals are bad because they account for 30% of our crime. And the proof that they account for 30% of our crime is that they are bad.

I'm not in favor of illegal immigration. I just favor a rational approach to dealing with the problem.

I don't need to bother with deporting them, take away their jobs, government benefits, any future opportunity of becoming citizens and the vast majority will deport themselves.

You then announce that anyone caught here after a certain date will face the forfeiture of all their assets, jail time and permanent expulsion from the U.S. That will take care of the majority of those left.

After that we round up the stragglers as the chance presents itself.

It's really very simple.

ok that works for me, now can we get the POLS to go along with it, if not do we have the guts to take to the streets ourselves to effect a change

Bush will likely veto

Bush's veto pen is stashed in one of those boxes in the warehouse with the Ark of the Covenant.

However, if the playing field is levelled many of these same businesses would prefer to hire legal workers.

And competition from those businesses's that hire illegals will either put them out of business or force them to hire illegals to compete in the market.

Now we are back to square one. Sorry, you solution failed.

That's too bad. I have occasionally had posters tell me to stop writing to them (usually while simultaneously lobbing a slew of insults my way). Each time it happens, I get the sense that the whole purpose is to set me up for possible suspension or banning if I dare to respond to their insults. Though I guess it is also possible that some people are just that thin-skinned.

I especially like the sign that says, "White racists go back to Europe."

That whole conquistador history thingy must have been an elective.

only way for an American businss to stay in business is to hire illegals?? You are very out of touch with the reality of running abusiness.

LOL. Of course. It looks like you, my friend, don't know about running a business.

Many people are in business only because they don't have to pay $9 hr. plus health for employees. Remove their labor and they will not stay in business one month.

I run a small business. I know of what I speak.

That IS funny. But, a dollar to a donut, he'd find that pen to veto anything without his precious guest-worker initiative. Just like he threatened to do in giving our ports control to the Arabs.

There is so much good fake ID available that it is impossible to separate illegals from legals.

LOL, wrong. The vast majority of fake ID's are bad. Good counterfeits are expensive and out of your average illegals price range.

Add to the fact, that ID's are easy to check; the business owner just has to want to check.

The "rational approach" being to bend over and like it, of course.

"Strictly enforce existing laws pertaining to hiring of illegals and they will self deport. No work. No free ride. Time to go home to their turd world countries and demand political changes there.

No brainer."

What do you do with the millions of Americans born to the illegals after you deport their parents?

Do you think that liberal judges would even allow the parents to be deported?

Its a more complex issue than many make it out to be.

If we pass laws that say nobody can hire an illegal, but you can't deport them because of the children, they now are on welfare forever.

Are people ready to pay more taxes for that?

With a border fence and some sort of a guest worker program for parents of anchor babies only, it makes more sense.

We can get the POLS to go along with it if they feel their jobs depend on it.

After all, there won't be anyone kissing their butts and buying them dinner if they aren't in office. Once we've made it clear that supporting illegal immigration will cost them their fat cat jobs they'll get on the ball.

As for taking to the streets, many have the guts, few have the time. Better to take to the airways, phone lines and mailboxes. All of which can be done from the convenience of home. We still outnumber the illegals by a wide margin and if everyone in the 80% takes to the phones, etc. it will be a tidal wave that will sweep the illegals back home.
