Mary Cheney and Partner Are About to Be Moms
Washington Post ^ | December 6, 2006 | Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts

Posted on 12/05/2006 11:04:34 PM PST by West Coast Conservative

Mary Cheney, the vice president's openly gay daughter, is pregnant. She and her partner of 15 years, Heather Poe, are "ecstatic" about the baby, due in late spring, said a source close to the couple.

It's a baby boom for grandparents Dick and Lynne Cheney: Their older daughter, Elizabeth, went on leave as deputy assistant secretary of state before having her fifth child in July. "The vice president and Mrs. Cheney are looking forward with eager anticipation to the arrival of their sixth grandchild," spokesman Lea Anne McBride said last night.

Cheney, 37, was a key aide to her father during the 2004 reelection campaign and now is vice president for consumer advocacy at AOL. Poe, 45, a former park ranger, is renovating their Great Falls home.

News of the pregnancy will undoubtedly reignite the debate about gay marriage. During the campaign, Mary Cheney was criticized by gay activists for not being more publicly supportive of same-sex marriage. Her father said people "ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to" but deferred to the president's policy supporting a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. Cheney herself called the proposed amendment "a gross affront to gays and lesbians everywhere" in her book, "Now It's My Turn: A Daughter's Chronicle of Political Life," which was published in May.

Cheney has described her relationship with Poe -- whom she took to last year's White House dinner honoring Prince Charles and Camilla-- as a marriage. The two met in 1988 while playing ice hockey and began dating four years later. They moved from Colorado to Virginia a year ago to be closer to Cheney's family.

I would say the latter two. I find no humor in it at all. I would add discouraging or disheartening to your list though.

"If this was Chelsea Clinton (or some other Democrat), she'd be on the talkshows promoting lesbian parenting as the new wave of progressivism.

The difference is between a private life publicized inadvertently (because Dick Cheney is VP) and a life which is intentionally directed to make publicity and push an agenda."

I've never seen Chelsea Clinton on a talk show, have you?
And in fairness and with balance, Mary Cheney DID write a book about her life entitled "Now Its My Turn" and she was on Oprah and other shows like Good Morning America and the Today Show promoting the book.

You are the one who brought up the red herring of "government OUT of our bedrooms and private lives". You are making the false assumption that since someone opposes sexual perversion and the abuse of the term family, they favor government regulation of this area. If this woman engages in sexual perversion, that is her own private business. However, it is wrong to glorify the perversion or her bearing a child from artificial insemination or some other immoral means as some sort of new standard.

Favoring lower taxes or a strong stand against terrorism is no excuse for glorifying what would and should rightly be condemned.

I think I am correct that Mary Cheney was about 16 when she told her parents of her sexual orientation that would have long before she wrote Sisters and co-hosted Crossfire.

If you want to bash people at least get your facts straight

TlalocW,

Thanks! You gave me my best laugh today!

The only reason we've got all these kids of famous conservatives (Dick Cheney, Alan Keyes, Randall Terry, Phyllis Schaffly, etc.) is because they were not good parents!

That was satire, right? You should mark it as such, or people might think you really mean it!

I must admit I did a double take with that one. You could say has certain conservative/right wing beliefs and values but devout Christian no.

I am not bashing your friend but the bible is clear on this one.

Sad but true and maybe is one of the reasons you are not longer the majority party

My response was not meant to be classy.

Next time you ask what happened to America look no further than how Americas values have changed since the start of the baby boomer generation.

I find personally that we are accepting more and more extreme liberal decline in traditional moral values.

All this in return for a payback of super sensitive politically correct feel good San Francisco type emotions.

Next thing to come will be ordering a child built to your specifications from Target or Wal-Mart.

I believe the Germans had such a program during World War Two to develop a super race.

It was condemned then so what has changed over the last 65 years?

For a while I *was* mildly amused to see conservatives doing the very things that had appalled most of us who remmeber what the "original" conservative goals were.

After reading this forum for the last year or so, I'd say that "disheartened" describes how I feel very well.

I don't care what Mary Cheney does with regard to having babies; and frankly, I am jealous that the Cheneys are going to have a new one!

I think it is abundantly clear from this thread that not everyone labels Mary CHeney's life as a perversion. Nor immoral.

You may see it that way but fortunately you don't determine what others see.

Mary CHeney is not a pervert in my opinion.

That was before the base decided that the Bible should be the party platform.

Peculiar syntax, but not for Wormwood.

The Bible has provided the "base" for America and the whole of Western Civilization.

Hopefully after this last election, things will start to get back to the way they used to be. I fondly remember that time, too, and I think it's high time it returned.

I will content m,yself by sayiung that I believe that lesian relgionship are wrong . artificial insemination is wrong, and raising a child in a lesbian household is wrong. A society can tolerate such things. Society can tolerate serial and just plain polygamy. But it will soon no longer be the same society.

And in only the last thing you mentioned did she say ANYTHING at all about being a lesbian.
From Wikipedia: Mary Cheney left the public spotlight after the 2004 election until May 4, 2006, when she gave an interview with Diane Sawyer for ABC News's Primetime program. Cheney did the interview to garner publicity for her new autobiography titled Now It's My Turn. She discusses how she came out to her parents, noting her father's initial reaction: "You know, look, you're my daughter and I love you and I just want you to be happy." She also discusses her 14-year relationship with her partner Heather Poe, but she remains noticeably ambivalent about her relationship with the Republican Party.

What would you have her do, just disappear off the face of the earth? Never mind. I think I know the answer to that one.
That's two things you're wrong about in one post! You're usually pretty good at "getting" posts like mine, so I'll give you a pass on this one.

Read the book there is only one chapter that mentions her lifestyle and if she had omitted that can you imagine what would have said selling out etc etc.

She clearly states her position where it differs from that of others within the Republican Party etc but in no way does she try to force it down your throat.

The rest of the book tells of her life from a small child supporting and being involved campaigning for her father. There are many funny incidents and stories and apart from that one chapter and casual references to Heather there is no further mention of that aspect of her life.

At least her child will have her sister's husband and her dad and hopefully other male role models. Dobson outlined nicely again on Larry King the other night the developmental issues of children who become gay. It can happen in any family. Raising kids is a grueling, time consuming job. Nobody does a perfect job.
