NYT: The Billionaires Bankrolling the Tea Party (Cue spooky music)
The New York Times ^ | August 28, 2010 | Frank Rich

Posted on 08/29/2010 2:22:18 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

ANOTHER weekend, another grass-roots demonstration starring Real Americans who are mad as hell and want to take back their country from you-know-who. Last Sunday the site was Lower Manhattan, where they jeered the “ground zero mosque.” This weekend, the scene shifted to Washington, where the avatars of oppressed white Tea Party America, Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin, were slated to “reclaim the civil rights movement” (Beck’s words) on the same spot where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. had his dream exactly 47 years earlier.

Vive la révolution!

There’s just one element missing from these snapshots of America’s ostensibly spontaneous and leaderless populist uprising: the sugar daddies who are bankrolling it, and have been doing so since well before the “death panel” warm-up acts of last summer. Three heavy hitters rule. You’ve heard of one of them, Rupert Murdoch. The other two, the brothers David and Charles Koch, are even richer, with a combined wealth exceeded only by that of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett among Americans. But even those carrying the Kochs’ banner may not know who these brothers are.

Their self-interested and at times radical agendas, like Murdoch’s, go well beyond, and sometimes counter to, the interests of those who serve as spear carriers in the political pageants hawked on Fox News. The country will be in for quite a ride should these potentates gain power, and given the recession-battered electorate’s unchecked anger and the Obama White House’s unfocused political strategy, they might.

All three tycoons are the latest incarnation of what the historian Kim Phillips-Fein labeled “Invisible Hands” in her prescient 2009 book of that title: those corporate players who have financed the far right ever since the du Pont brothers spawned the American Liberty League in 1934 to bring down F.D.R.

with a combined wealth exceeded only by that of Bill Gates and Warren Buffett among Americans.

The actual Bill Gates and the actual Warren Buffett fund left-wing political causes all the time. Yet, somehow, the NYT does not find this menacing. Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway actually owns The Washington Post Company, which in turn owns Newsweek, Slate, El Tiempo Latin, Cable One, and several large newspapers.

those corporate players who have financed the far right ever since the du Pont brothers spawned the American Liberty League in 1934 to bring down F.D.R.

FDR was re-elected in 1936, re-elected in 1940, re-elected in 1944, and then he died. His successor won election in 1948. So there doesn't seem to be much correlation between right-wing billionaires and left-wing electoral success.

And all this time, I have been opposing the Obama Socialist take-over of America on an un-paid volunteer basis. Who knew there was big money in this?!?

Do these people like Frank Rich read their own garbage? They are so far removed from reality like some spoiled brat child who does not get their way.

I'm starting to feel sorry for the willfully ignorant BSM they have not got a clue what is about to happen to them...Although well deserved!

Notice the sneering tone. The Kochs are evil because they are only interested in politics because they want to lower their taxes, while Soros is noble, because he supports higher taxes. The is always that assumption that higher taxes are good.

Maybe the Kochs realize that higher taxes are evil in and of themselves, regardless of what it means to their personal finances? Surely they can afford whatever the government is demanding. A change of three percent in the capital gains tax isn’t going to effect their lifestyle, one way or the other.

These idiots at the Times just can’t but play their old, dog-eared class-warfare card. Besides the race card, it’s the only card they have left in the deck.

It’s not a sacrifice when the higher taxes lead to government money that gets funnelled to your businesses by government. Interlocked government and big business is a component of fascist economics — and Soros and his president, Obama, are fascists.

Where to I submit my expense reports for reimbursement of travel and hand painted signage? I've been to several of these rallies, town hall meetings, and demonstrations beginning in late February, 2009 at City Hall Park in New York — a couple of weeks after Rick Santelli’s historic “rant”.

On the other hand, I have been getting daily solicitations from numerous — some questionable — on-line organizations asking that I send them money. Maybe that's what the New York Times is talking about.

Yes, and where does Rich expose the mafia running Climate Change in order to set-up the old carbon credits gambit? Billionaire Al Gore and Maurice Strong are at the center of that but they haven’t profited, have they?

Frank doesn’t get the fact that the Tea Party members actually work for a living themselves so, unlike the lib protestors who live off our tax dollars or are funded by a leftist group, the Tea Party members travel on their own dime. Of course, Frank never lets the facts get in the way of a good smear job.

“Notice the sneering tone. The Kochs are evil because they are only interested in politics because they want to lower their taxes, while Soros is noble, because he supports higher taxes. The is always that assumption that higher taxes are good.”

Every time wealthy leftists talk about the need for higher taxes on the wealthy they should be called on to open their checkbooks and give to the government what they feel is its due. Notice Gates and Buffett, who support higher taxes, are currently basking in praise from the liberal media for their pledges to give their fortunes to charity. They can just as easily give their fortunes to the government.

I had to laugh given how much money various Leftist political groups and lobbyiing groups are funded by financier George Soros, Steven Bing (who made his fortune in the entertainment industry) and Peter Lewis (who’s on the Progressive Insurance company Board of Directors).

I know its easy and fun to pick on this moron ankle biter, but I think he should just be ignored. The NYT is obviously about to go belly-up. The more Rich writes for them, the faster that will occur.

It's interesting how the left so regularly accuses us on the right of doing whatever the leftists are ashamed to be doing themselves.

Here in northern NJ, I went to a Tea Party meeting week before last and the "billionaire" who seemed to be bankrolling everything mentioned the small trucking company she owned in conjunction with her remarks about how much the business's health insurance premiums were scheduled to rise next year under Obamacare.
