Walmart ruining holidays for workers
vanity | November 13, 2011 | Linda Martine

Posted on 11/13/2011 11:06:23 AM PST by eccentric

Around the country, night workers at Walmart stores are being told to come in five hours early ON Thanksgiving. After having work until 7am that morning, they must get whatever sleep they can and then reutrn to work at 5pm for a 12 hour shift. How much time does this leave for them to spend the holiday with their family?

Walmart wants to call their employees associates. No, they are just workers.

Be thankful to have a good job with a stable company and enjoy the overtime pay!

When in college, I worked a couple of summers in a grain elevator. During harvest, I put in as many as 123 hours in one week.

Tired ... absolutely! But I was able to put the money to good use by completing an engineering degree and an MBA ... both from from top 10 programs ... with only $2,000 in debts ... despite paying 100 percent of my own costs.

Perhaps you too have a good use for the extra money. If not, then perhaps you can find another job more suited to your desires and work habits. And if not, you can always become self-employed, providing you have marketable job skills.

I wonder HOW we all survived when stores were closed on Sundays...because most people went to church to honor God?

On THIS, I guess I will take exception and say that Walmart might want to consider being open for only a partial day and allowing everyone to give thanks to God...with their families.

I FULLY believe that, because we turned away from HIM...we lost further blessings that He would have had for us.....and slowly but SURELY...we are reaping the results now.

;-(

I love the people who post the fatuous remark "If you don't like it get another job." A wonderful and acceptable bromide in the abstract.(I can just hear the same remark when the ten year old complains of being tired after working a twelve hour shift in the mine.) The idiot devotee of such "wisdom" never realizes that the bromide usually does not apply to the specific individual worker, as there may be no other jobs available. No employer should ever have the "right" to compel a person to work twelve hours per day seven days a week.

Yeah, the Thanksgiving/Christmas timeframe sucks when you’re in retail. That’s why I ran away and got a better job.

There is no overtime at Walmart.

B.S.

Management can and does approve OT when needed...

They will be sent home four hours early from their next shift.

True...but Wal-Mart is hardly the only company that does that...

There is only My Share every three months which every employee gets,

You make that sound like a bad thing...how many other retail companies hand out a quarterly bonus to EVERYONE

For decades I worked all holidays, the business didn’t close as it was a care facility, and am
just beginning to enjoy holidays now that I’m semi retired. I would say be grateful you have a job.

All stores should close on Thanksgiving. Let the people be home with their families for goodness sakes! My opinion.

Dairy farmers don’t get ANY days off. They have to work 365 days a year, 366 for Leap Years.

Quir your bitching

Quit Whining, I am 82 years old, our store will be open on Thanksgiving, we will be working, also we get no time and a half, we have not had a raise in 4 years, and a long line in Las Vegas who would like to replace me. Cannot retire until Obama is history

I work for a utility company. I am on-call for all of Thanksgiving weekend so I cannot leave the service area. If they don’t call me, I get $29/day for being on-call. My family lives outside the service area so I won’t be seeing them on Thanksgiving and I may not make any money other than the $29/day.

This is just the nature of working in our 24/7 “get it done now” culture. Everyone demands power and water at all times just as they demand Wal-Mart Black Friday bargains at midnight. Someone has to go to work to make sure those things happen. It sucks to be us!

But, in this economy, it would suck even more to not have our jobs.

Should we enact a law? Nordstrom is famous for getting their entire crew on board Thanksgiving evening to prep for black Friday. If you work there, you know what to expect.

***This is demanded by the Walmart head honchos in Bentonville, Arkansas****

Well bo-ho-ho! I retired after 31 years with a company that required me to work rotating shifts, double shifts, holidays, weekends. I can’t remember a full Thanksgiving or Christmas day with the family.

Eight hours a day for 25 years, then 12 hour days, all rotating shifts. In my last years there I didn’t even get a full set of days off due to being called in to work.

Got paid very well for it.

I feel for you but thats the way it is in these decadent times - decadent: fallen from a higher ideal or plane.

Used to be that our holidays were sacrosanct - you couldn’t work on them if you wanted to, but now they are just Western Civilization’s meaningless holidays made up by old men in past times...

Bet if it was Ramadan any muslim would have off faster than you can blink an eye

Diversity is strength and all that PC tripe - try to have a happy Thanksgiving !
