Bob Barker, the retired game-show host, has no idea why he ended up on the National Rifle Associations enemies list. I know exactly why the NRA cited me.
Ive spent years pushing for sensible gun-safety laws, including universal background checks, a ban on assault-type weapons and a waiting period before firearms purchases. I wasnt surprised to learn that my name was among those on a surprisingly long and eclectic list of corporations, Hollywood celebrities, medical groups and even sports teams that the NRA has declared anti-gun.
By contrast, the 89-year-old Barker keeps a handgun on his bedside table and has never demanded more stringent gun laws, he told Time magazine. He has, however, protested a live pigeon-shoot in Pennsylvania and doesnt think civilians need assault weapons or high-capacity magazines.
Of course, if you know anything about the NRA, you know thats enough. Its extremism is dangerous, absurd and viciously dogmatic dismissing anyone who doesnt think civilians should own their own shoulder-fired rocket launchers as an enemy. It is a radical organization of paranoid conspiracy theorists who believe they might have to fight off their government with their assault rifles. Think of that goofy 1984 movie, Red Dawn, wherein a group of high school kids fights off a Soviet invasion, and youll get some idea of its mindset.
Its easy enough to mock the NRA; its representatives are parodies in motion. But a look across the political and civic landscape suggests that much of the gun lobbys extremism has invaded the broader culture, creating a deeply polarized view of firearms use that relies on stock stereotypes, not reality.
Take the silly kerfuffle that followed President Obamas recent disclosure that he enjoys skeet-shooting at Camp David...

Cynthia Tucker and “sensible” do not belong together
Leftists like this woman never seem to mention that “The Gun Lobby” organizations merely stand in place of the hundred million plus Americans those organizations speak for.
I’d label her as an enemy of America, not just the NRA.
She already has her gun. And probably a man or three to back her up. It’s those other people she wants to keep guns away from. Typical liberal female. It was a huge mistake to let liberal females to have any political say in society.
I dearly miss her unintentional funny editorials at Atlanta Urinal Constapation and her always enlightened commenters. I know read Bookman for chuckles. She is know lecturing at University of Georgia.

Given her inability to write anything “sensible” she should be stripped of her 1st Amendment rights.Bioooootch!
Hey Cynthia, we are speaking out. Hear us roar.
We have Cyn, now piss off.
I agree that we need sensible gun laws.
Take the average number of urban ferals involved in a flashmob (or beat whitey night at the Iowa State Fair), multiply that by the average number of bullets it takes to stop a rampaging thug and you have reached a sensible number of bullets for a magazine.
Now examine the fire rate necessary to stop said group of ferals before they harm you and a sensible law would not prohibit fully automatic weapons.
Both want me thrown in jail for owning the best home defense weapon.
Those wishing to make me vulnerable to assault side with my enemies.
Cynthia Tucker-IQ -5.
She’s the piece of offal that suggested we fly over Iraq and drop cans of Spam for all the civilians during the start of the war.
No wonder our universities are in such sad shape if they invite the likes of HER to “lecture” on anything!
I believe the NICS system is a violation of our rights. Wonder what she thinks of me...
Cynthia Tucker and intelligence do not belong together.
I remember Tucker from another column that made no sense.
Glad to see that she is consistent.
Old “Pekin” saying: “Never let reality effect your thinkin’.”
I think SENSIBLE GUN OWNERS are speaking out, Cynthia, it’s just that you don’t like what they’re saying.
Cynthia just wants you to give up a little bit of your freedom, not all of it. Sort of like African Americans were forced to after Plessy v. Ferguson.
It's like this: You no more NEED a semi-automatic rifle with a 30 round magazine than Rosa Parks NEEDED to ride on the front of that bus.
What you really need is for your rights to be respected.
