Ramsay Hunt syndrome is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox. After chickenpox clears up, the virus still lives in your nerves. Years later, it may reactivate. When it does, it can affect your facial nerves.

Prompt treatment of Ramsay Hunt syndrome can reduce the risk of complications, which can include permanent facial muscle weakness and deafness.

How can someone 28 years old have shingles, let alone chickenpox? I thought they vaccinated infants against it.

We have a family member who had shingles in her late 30s.

And a person can get chicken pox at any age. The older you are, the more dangerous it is.

I don’t know where Bieber grew up, but he may not have been vaccinated. A lot of older people have not been; I haven’t, and I’ve never had chicken pox to my knowledge.

My household picked up chickenpox at church. My wife was spared having had it as a child. I was 31 at the time and my three sons picked it up as well. My son had juvenile shingles around his waist. He was about 7 years old. I didn’t know what it was because he was a kid and treated it with stuff that didn’t work. Went to a dermatologist and he diagnosed it as shingles.

My son was in a lot of pain for kid, but the medicine worked pretty quick. I took him to a toy store to reward him for taking it so well after the pain was gone. I told him he could pick anything he wanted in the store within reason.

He chose a bag of Cat’s eye marbles.
