Over the years, Ford's pony car has gained performance and sophistication, sometimes at the expense of old-school character. Now, the new 2024 Ford Mustang is getting further from its roots by losing its AM radio receiver as controversy over the technology's future in new cars escalates.
The AM radio's discontinuation was discovered in an order guide for the new Mustang that circulated on the Mustang7G forum. A Ford spokesperson confirmed the feature's deletion to The Drive, citing that "countries and automakers globally are modernizing radio by offering internet streaming through mobile apps, FM, or digital."
This makes the Mustang the second Ford product after the 2023 F-150 Lightning to drop the function.
The availability of AM radio in new cars has declined over the last decade with shifts in media consumption habits, with AM radio's audience evaporating in Europe and accounting for only a small minority of the U.S. population. Naturally, automakers seeking to cut costs are removing what's now a niche piece of equipment. AM has already disappeared from many European cars, and is beginning to fall out of favor with American makes too—as shown by the aforementioned Fords.
It's a trend of concern to current and former U.S. emergency officials, who recently wrote the Secretary of Transportation a letter advising action on AM radio's disappearance. AM radio is a crucial component of the U.S.'s national alert network, with just 75 stations reaching more than 90 percent of the country's population. Officials are concerned that AM receivers' decreasing availability in new cars could compromise their ability to reach citizens during emergencies.
However, standalone AM radios remain an affordable way to negate the absence of a receiver in one's vehicle

That’s what Heart Radio is for. Plug your cell phone into your readio and keep trucking.
“ Who needs to listen to conservative AM radio anyway? ”

IMHO, that’s the reason for this action by Ford.
True, and forcing a Sirius XM subscription
I don’t think I have turned on a radio in three years. I stream everything. However, I have the gut feeling that Ford doesn’t want people to listen to conservative talk radio or religious programming.
They are taking away everything I like. I don’t want to live in this world for which I am not suited.
I force myself to grudgingly adapt to much of it but I hate the interconnected tech world and the people ruining my life over their fetishes.
Now that Rush is gone, I never turn my radio on at all. If Rush were still with us, I would hate the deletion of the AM band because Rush never allowed his show on Sirius or anything else. And even if he did, I’m a dinosaur who doesn’t (and won’t) carry around a device that tracks me everywhere I go.
Yes, it’s a giant conspiracy to prevent you from listening to conservative talk radio. (Insert eye roll here.)
I listen to AM radio regularly, but mostly Art Bell reruns on Saturdays, and oldies stations every day, but in the house. Car is set on FM station as I get too much interference and trouble finding my AM stations in it.
When Rush Limbaugh was alive most of his stations were AM Radio, a lot of sports talk radio is still AM radio and Rush never was on any form of satellite radio
Rush had so many advertisers chomping at the bit he didn’t need satellite.
I really miss Art.
I also miss the CBS radio mystery theater and a lot of other old time radio sows.
When I used to go camping with my kids we would listen to Gunsmoke or X -1 or Johnny Dollar, or any of the myriad of other shows that we might get.
Today I think people pack their mini projectors and watch woke movies about gender changing ‘superheros’
In New England we have a the Howe Carr Show out of Boston who was just after Rush on many of the affiliates. He currently has ~20 affiliates mostly in the AM band.
The #1 radio station in Los Angeles is KFI640 AM and most of the state of California is the John & Ken show on KFI.
They are mostly conservative. They like to rip apart the democrats and politicians in general.
Search: draws an estimated weekly audience of approximately 1.2 million listeners each week.
That’s not the reason Rush never went on satellite at least according to Rush, going on satellite would hurt local affiliates which were loyal to him from the beginning and took his show when no one was
Given the boycotts he faced over the years it would have been easy to go on n satellite and not need so many advertisers but being loyal he never did
Why did he not allow that?
How far up your ass do you need to have your head to say something like that after the Twitter files?
Or OnlineRadioBox. It’s free and they don’t ask for email.
